on power up I get the normal Thinkpad logo screen, but with 2 options in the lower left of the screen, F1 to enter BIOS setup and F12 to select boot drive.

If I press F1 or F12 the writing at the bottom changes to indicate that it is entering the Bios util. or preparing the boot drive list, but after that the system just hangs and does nothing.

Could this be a corrupt Bios?
If so, does anyone know how I can re-write it?
The system does not read the floppy drive if I put a disk in at startup. All drives can be heard powering up, but the system does not access them.

I do have a spare m/b with a working Bios, but the board itself is dead. Does anyone know which is the Bios cmos chip? If there is no other option I will try swapping the chips.

Your harddisk may be toast. Try booting without it. What does it show then?

Did you try resetting the bios CMOS by disconnecting the battery for 1 minute?
