MAXTOR 40GB ON CHAINTECH

I had Samsung 6GB HD but he died in a great theatrical stile (strange loud noises from inside). So I replaced him with Maxtor 40GB, but mu motherboard does not recognize it. BIOS version is 05/13/1999-i440bx-w977tf-2a69kc39c-00. I assume that BIOS upgrade will solve this problem but I don’t know where to look for it. I need that computer as soon as possible! HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have visited award site, but they ask for almost 30$ for update, and I am not even sure that is the correct update which will solve my problem! By the way, for 30$ I might by Pentium III motherboard and CPU (but I like my Celeron 533!!!! )! Is there a solution?
