Why can't i boot from USB?

Postby gr_adrian » Tue Feb 02, 2010 1:56 pm

Hello everyone

I can't seem to be able to boot from a USB Memory Stick even though i can chose USB-FDD, USB-ZIP, USB-CDROM as boot devices (check picture).
Can my BIOS be able to boot from USB but my motherboard not?
Do i need to update my BIOS?
All my USB ports are working fine and i tried to boot from 2 USB sticks without success.

My motherboard : nForce3 250
BIOS : version 6.00 PG, date 10/19/2004, Phoenix Technologies LTD

Looking forward to your replies.

What exactly is your motherboard ?
Have you tried the manufacturers website ?

Please make sure "Legacy USB support" is enabled in Bios. "Boot other devices" (barely visbible on your screenie) should be enabled as well.
Have a look at the setting "Hard disk boot priority" (visible on top of your screen) - it may be possible you'll find your Stick there but behind the standard HDD .

make sure to set BOOT OTHER DEVICES to ENABLED. the stick should be handled as USB-ZIP by the BIOS, so you should set this as first boot device.
if you boot up your mainboard the USB stick should show up during POST already. if it doesn't: plug it in before you switch on your machine or try another USB port.
if it doesn't boot from the usb stick make sure it really IS bootable (bootable partition, bootloader installed, something bootable on the stick).
If you email me include [WIMSBIOS] in the subject.
