2 things:
a) The 07/15/95 date is just the kernel date. It has nothing to do with the bios revision, which you can see a few inches above the BIOS ID string.
b) If I got it right, inserting the HDD parameters manually as user-defined works ok?

indeed it works, but only partially: the pc starts up because the bios doesn't stops when starting (when hdd set to auto bios keeps searching for a hd), but the behaviour of win98se (and even dr-dos for the wd-diagnostics) doesn't give me much confidence for future use of the data on the hd.
