Problem with patched bios

Postby kriv » Wed Nov 13, 2002 1:27 pm

Thanks for the patch but I had a problem with it. The flashing went ok. I entered the setup screen after rebooting and went to the ide autodetect option. I saw the top line of the screen and a 2 near the bottom of the screen were you usually see the option number for the lba/normal parameter type, and that's about it. I had to do a ctrl-alt-del to get out of the menu. Enetering the standard cmos menu also showd a corrupted screen and I also had to reboot out of it. Luckily the previous cmos parameters were active so the machine booted up. I did not want to play around with the system because the original bios that I saved onto the floppy during flashing had errors and would not load back, and I could not get the download link for the bios at the QDI website to work. I have a couple of questions.

1. Do I need to clear the cmos (/cc option) when flashing to the patched bios? I didn't do it last night so could that have been my problem?

2. I used awdflash 8.22B. The QDI website has a download link for version 5.5. Did I need to use the older version for flashing or does it matter if the flash appears to load sucessfully.

thanks

I suggest you go to www.qdi.nl , download the latest BIOS file for your board, extract ONLY the AWARD flasher contained in the ZIP file and use it. The ZIP file contains a text file with instructions.

Try flashing the BIOS contained in the zip file first to see whether the file is good or not. If satisfied, try flashing the patched version.

Clearing CMOS can be done after flashing, with the appropriate jumper for it. You may want to use /CC/CD/CP combined when using the flasher. This will give your BIOS a fresh new start.

Note: before reflashing your board, I suggest you try clearing CMOS to see whether that fixes your problem.

Looks like another BIOS which does not like the 64GB patch.

other attempts to use patched bios

Postby kriv » Thu Nov 14, 2002 1:58 pm

I tried some of the suggestions. First thing I did was clear cmos and still got the bad screens. I was able to successfully download the flasher and production bios from the QDI site ealier in the day so I then reflashed using the awdflash /CC/CD/CP and production bios from the QDI zip file. The screens looked fine but of course still had the 40gb hang problem. I then flashed using the same awdflash and /CC/CD/CP options but this time used the patched bios. The problems with the screens reappeared but the system was able to detect 40gb drive and appeared to boot up ok.
Not having the ide detect screen is not a problem since the cmos seems to detect the drives anyway and the LBA default is what I use anyway. The messed up standard cmos screen is a little more annoying since you cannot change the date/time using cmos setup. The default cmos also does not see the 5.25" drive in my combo floppy drive but that is o.k. since I only use 3.5" floopy disks anyway. As far as I am concerned the patched bios is usable but I would not list it as an approved patched bios.
I don't know what you use as a source for your patched bios but I wonder if it was derived from titanium IB+ code? I ask this question due to the fact that when I had to reset the cpu speed after reflashing, the production bios defaulted to the speedeasy option whereas the patched bios displayed jumper setting options first at which point I changed the option to indicate easyspeed.

Thanks for all of your help and if want to try patching again I will be more than happy to test the new version for you.

The 32GB patch works always, the 64GB does weird things sometimes.

Rainbow's patch works

Postby kriv » Mon Nov 18, 2002 1:34 am

Thanks ajzchips and Rainbow for all of the help. I reflashed using AWDflash 5.5 and Rainbow's patched bios. Not only did the bios recognize the drive like ajzchips did, but the menus are also working fine. Did not have to use any options or clear cmos.

Thanks again and I will remember this message board when I need assistance with other motherboards.
