Sound card lost after Flashing BIOS

Recommended by Wim's BIOS...

I've set that setting (On Board Sound) in the BIOS to both enable and disable. It makes no difference. The Yamaha sound card was on the machine when it was purchased new (by me).

With the exception of a new floppy drive, a CD burner and a new Hard Drive, it's the same system. I cannot explain why the sound doesn't work. It worked IMMEDIATELY prior to the flash but not after it.

I guess this above everyone's head. Thanks for the help guys.

It is interesting why a motherboard with on-board sound would have been sold brand new with a sound card installed...

Can you get the on-board sound to work at all (remove the Yamaha card for the time being)?

Can you try the card in another machine to see if it is still working?

Also, as NickS suggested, they can patch your old BIOS to see the new HD. Then you could find out if it is BIOS related for some strange reason...

Try this, and report back. Sometimes odd problems like this are hard to diagnose without the actual machine in front of you...

Seems that the on board sound IS the Yamaha OPL3-SAX card I referred to. Since it needed drivers I assumed that it was a separate card but it's not. It's all on the motherboard with no way to remove it.

I guess we assumed it was a seperate card...
Please make sure before we go on. A sound card will be in an ISA or PCI slot. If it isn't a seperate card, then look on the motherboard and see if you can find the sound chip (might say Yamaha on it...don't know).

New BIOS then could be the culprit, if it isn't setting up for the on-board chip right.. See if one of the moderators can patch your old BIOS, then try again.

Wait a min...

Chaintech says this board has an ESS Solo-1 PCI stereo audio controller [ES1938]...

Perhaps the MIDI portion uses the Yamaha OLP3 synthesis...

See if that is the sound chip that you find on the motherboard... I would have thought Windows would have found and set that up properly...
