Which BIOS Update

Recommended by Wim's BIOS...

I'm about to do a major upgrade to my M571-V7.0a motherboard according to the info on Timmy's page: (http://home.directlink.net/~timmy/M571/M571.htm) but have some confusion as to which of the TWO updates I need to use. I just used 990421s.rom but the manufacturer's site lists 990305s.rom as the update. which is the latest and greatest?

DUDE! The last thing I needed was more confusion. I wasn't even able to find the flash for the M571 V7.0a, NOT LMR, board at the maze of links you provided. Until I get info I feel I can count on, I'll stick with Timmy's advice!

Thanks, Guys! I'm more of hardware, component level troubleshooting kind of guy, but I'm doing my best to muddle through with a little help from you! Can you tell me exactly what issues this update addresses?

Well, someone did label me "BIOS Rookie". My original BIOS date was 3/5/'99 and is now 4/21/'99. The latest BIOS date listed at the provided link is 1/29/'99. It's been a long day, but I didn't see any of my BIOS release dates on the Release.txt page. Just what am I missing? I'm about to start fiddling with my CPU voltage dividers and this ain't some TV like I'm used to. Can you blame me for wanting to make sure everything is "tweaked" to the max before I take the next step?

The April 1999 release is just about as good as the May release, so your system should be very stable as it is right now.
The major problem solved was the secondary IDE spinning HDDs down too soon.

Does anyone know if my BIOS of 4/21/'99 will allow hard drives greater than 8.4G? With a family of five, 10Gs of hard drive fills real fast, especially with three teens downloading music.

4/21/99 should support at least 32GB if not more.

OK, Fella's, I attempted to flash my BIOS with 990514s.rom using Ami703e.com and got the error message "System BIOS does not have flash support". When I tried it with Amifl632.com, I was told the file (a:\990514s.rom) does not exist, even though I followed all of Timmy's advice, making a dos boot disk in dos, (a:\format a:/u/s) and extracting the downloaded zip files directly to the dos boot disk. The dir command showed all the files on the disk. Any suggestions?!?!?!

Check whether the BIOS update has the read-only attribute enabled. If so, disable it.

It WAS read-only, now it's just checked as an archive. I'll let you know how it goes.

Good. That read-only issue usually solves over 70% of the "File not found" error reported by many flashers.

BTW, I've noticed several times that the flasher itself won't work properly if it's read-only attribute is set.
