BIOS settings for a PCI Modem

Recommended by Wim's BIOS...

A thunderstorm took out the AMR Modem in a friend's Tiny PC. I have replaced it with a PCI Modem, however, the driver installation (which is automatic from the CD) freezes the PC requiring a power down to restart (not good running Win 98SE). Do I need to disable the AC'97 modem chip through the BIOS to make the PCI Modem work? Or is there another trick?

Do you mean your system has onboard modem?

If yes, then disable it.

If no, then do not disable the AC '97 modem in BIOS setup. Else your PCI modem will not be detected.

AFAIK the AMR is just the i/f between the POST and the MB. Software drivers do the rest. There is no onboard modem.

Have you uninstalled and removed the bad hardware from the motherboard?

Indeed I have. However, I have no found the roblem was that the drivers for the AMR modem hadn't been removed fully. After a little bit if searching and tweaking I have finally got the PCI modem to work. Thank you for your advice.
