need bios update for pci usb card?

Recommended by Wim's BIOS...

I recently installed a pci usb card because my old computer (pentium 486 233mHz) doesn't have any usb ports. Windows 98SE doesn't detect it and there's no USB listing under System Properties/Device Manager. The USBman.com site suggests I need to update my BIOS but I can't seem to find an update for it. The ID# is 51-0506-001437-00101111-071595-M571-007_66_M571 and chipset is SiS 5597 rev 2 . If anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!

The Pcchips M571 does have USB but you need an ATX form card or a similar device to get them usable (or front USB on your case).
Your PCI USB card may require PCI Rev 2.2 but your board only has Rev 2.1 - some cards work but others not.
Did you try to install this card into the other PCI slot ?

I'd try a BIOS update. Some older BIOS releases are known to simply ignore some newer cards, but what Dennis mentions regarding the PCI revision is very important.

What USB card BTW?

It's a startech 2-port usb 1.1 pci card according to the manufacturer's website. Does this mean it doesn't match my board's pci revision requirement? Also, I can't recall if there was another free pci slot, so I'll have to check.

P1-233 doesn't meet the specs...

"PC - Intel Pentium 2 at 400MHz or faster, Intel Celeron at 900MHz or faster, AMD Athlon of any speed"

USB does not depend on CPU MHz, even with lower MHz the device should at least be detected.

Is there any unknown device visible in device manager ?

I finally got windows to detect USB...enabled onchip usb in new bios. I borrowed a USB mouse from work to test my port and it didn't get detected. I checked the IRQ settings...USB is listed under 11. In the USBman website, they specify it should be 9. Is this the problem? They also say any cards should share the same IRQ as the mobo's built-in USB. How do I figure out what that should be?

The manual states the card is PCI 2.1, so that is OK.

The USB detected is probably the on-board one, so that is why the mouse was not detected.

IRQ should not matter.

Did you manually run the New Hardware Wizard to see if it can detect the new card?

You could have a bad card as well...

I ran the detect Hardware function but the only thing that pops up is a logitech serial mouse...I'm trying to test with a logitech usb mouse. I thought the card was already detected?...listing of usb root hub and ohci usb host controller in device manager?

As I said, when you turned on USB in the BIOS, it probably setup the on-board controller. You'd have to see what USB hardware was found and compare it to what is available on the card to be sure.

If you run EVEREST or some other program (like Craig Hart's PCI), does it detect the new card (even though it is not available on the system yet)?
