You have the latest release already, and a BIOS that new should already have large HDD support.

Sometimes on, sometimes not? I believe it's an HDD problem then.

Try with a new IDE cable.
More than 100,000 BIOS strings in my database just now!

Is it only not detected at cold bood or at warm boot (reset) as well ?

Do you enter HDD parameters in Bios setup or is it autodetected at every boot ?

Do you hear some strang enoises from your HDD ?

It's possible you HDD needs to0 long for self-initialization and Bios HDD detect skipped it
