gigabyte ga-60x

Recommended by Wim's BIOS...

Hi,

I have a gigabyte ga-60x motherboard with award bios. I want to change some settings including acpi mode and pnp pci configuration but these entries do not exist in my bios!

Anyone know how i can change them, and if not, why not?

Is this a really rubbish board?

Check to see if they exist, but are hidden, using MODBIN.

According to MS specification, ACPI must be always enabled. That's why it's hidden in most new BIOSes.

1st what is modbin? If modbin identifies the setting are there but hidden how can i access them?

2nd what about plugnplay pci conf? This should be set to 'no' according to my soundcard manufacturer.

Modbin is a utility that can modify BIOS images. It can hide/unhide settings and also change some texts. If you want to modify the BIOS, you can do it by using this utility, then save the file and flash it. Don't do it if you don't know how to fix it if it fails.

Don't know about PnP OS, but it should not matter. BTW. what sound card is that?

It's the m-audio audiophile 2496. In my opinion it is pretty crap with clicks and pops at lower latencies in cubase. I complained and thats why m-audio tech support suggested installing in standard pc mode so it has its own irq, and therefore they say you need to turn off acpi mode in the bios aswell. Does this make sense?

i tried using modbin to unhide the acpi mode setting but when flashed i get a 'BIOS ROM CHECKSUM ERROR'.

Why does this happen? Do I have to update the checksum manually? How do I do this?

If you saw that message upon your first boot after flashing, this is perfectly normal. As soon as you "SAVE AND EXIT", even without altering any entry, that "error" message will disappear.

but the keyboard doesnt work so i cant get into the bios.

any ideas?

Do you get Award BootBlock BIOS and BIOS ROM checksum error?
Do you remember "Don't do it if you don't know how to fix it if it fails"?
It failed. Read the FAQ at the main page here. The board should be able to boot from floppy and flash the BIOS again.

i have restored the bios from floppy. just wondering whether i can do anything about updating the checksum so it doesnt fail?
