The problem is not the ESS card itself but the drivers that are provided by Microsoft for it. Drivers for this card are included from Windows 98SE and they were always bad - I had some BSODs with this card. When I installed the VXD drivers from ESS, everything was OK (but Windows 2K/XP can't use VXD drivers).

i owe you guys much more than feedback...

To Rainbow:
True...I kinda thought of that coz there were absolutley no problems for win9x, linux etc..all work fine. However ess maintains that I use the bundled drivers for it. No updates forthcoming.
Anyways, the yamaha sound card is 10 times better than mine...
so I'll stick to it.
