Hi everyone, this is a great thread and gives me hope that I can upgrade my HP nc4000 laptop from an HP Intel 2200BG card to an Atheros AR5008 802.11n card.

The current HP Intel card details are:-

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_4220&SUBSYS_12F5103C&REV_05\3&61AAA01&0&48

The new Atheros card when installed during standby does work with an IBM AR5008 driver I found on the internet.
The new card ID in Device Manager is:-

PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_0023&SUBSYS_0087106B&REV_01\3&61AAA01&0&48

I have tried to follow SEMI's ADDCC V3 Tutorial but get hopelessly lost when it comes to ammending the BIOS file.
The BIOS for the nc4000 is F.30 (68BAS.BIN) and can be found here:-

You seem to understand this procedure completely, please could you ammend the BIOS file and upload it to the Rapidshare website where I downloaded your great software and Tutorial?
Unfortunately unless you or someone with an equally skilled understanding of this procedure was sitting alongside me I don't think I will be able to successfully "hack" the BIOS for my nc4000 laptop.

I haven't seen Semi post for a while and I'm sure he would get swamped with similar requests if he did start performing whitelist editting for anyone who asked. So why not purchase a USB floppy drive and confirm the bios recovery procedure (win+b or 4-arrows) work? If so then can have a go at hacking the bios. Maybe someone else can do it for you for some paypal donation?

Alternatively if your bios doesn't halt the bootup with an "Unsupported WWAN card" error when have the Atheros AR5008 connected, then could use the whitelist software workaround here instead.

Thanks for your reply.
I do get the error 104 message if I boot with the Atheros card already in the PC.
On the other hand when doing the inserting the Atheros card from Windows Standby and coming out of standby I can confirm the wireless n card works ok.
I have spent several hours playing around with SEMI's ADDCC ver3 and the ver3 Tutorial but get more confused the longer I look at it!
Some things are just not clear for me and unless it is completely "idiot proof" I would very likely get it wrong.
Part of the problem is that the video tutorial uses ver2 so this also confuses things, a ver3 video might help.
I would gladly make a PayPal payment if one of the Technical Geniuses on this site could process the BIOS fix using the details in my 1st post and then upload the correct ammended BIOS file to a website somewhere.
Reading through the whole thread several times the successful outcome appears to be tantalisingly within reach but not there yet.

Well disaster has struck!

After playing around with the ADDCC ver3 and the pdf Tutorial and ver2 Video Tutorial again I managed to seemingly update the BIN file with the ammended wireless n card details and adjust the CRC checksum so the ADDCC ver3 showed the patched file as matching the original file.
Unfortunately after flashing the BIOS with the patched BIN file from my USB Floppy drive my nc4000 will no longer boot up.

I was relying on the Emergency Recovery procedure with the external USB floppy drive to restore the BIOS if this happened but holding the Windows key + B key does not work and neither does holding all 4 arrow keys.
All I get is the laptop powering on with the fan working and mains light and nothing else.

Oh well I realised this was a risk when I went down this road.
I suppose I will have to investigate the removing and flashing the BIOS chip if I can.

Looking at the failures through this thread and my own failure to successfully complete this "hacking" procedure I believe the risk is just not worthwhile.

Well I have some good news, I am typing this from my repaired HP nc4000 laptop!
I found someone who was able to remove the bios chip and fit a socket + new bios chip and this fortunately has restored my laptop to fully functional condition - it is such a relief!
To keep costs down I removed the motherboard myself and sent it to "Grains Bios Repair" who can be found at the following address:-

Paul the proprietor is a magician and I am so grateful he has been able to "unbrick" my nc4000.
So no more bios hacking for me, I will look at buying either a USB wireless N dongle or a PCMCIA card instead.

Alright, where to start.

I've been studying this thread for the last couple days, attempting to figure out this checksum crap. I understand the concepts (I think), and when I DO complete a matching checksum BIN and flash it, I get an unresponsive or "bricked" system. I recover the system and try again. So far, two flash attempts have gotten me the same result.

I'll paypal over 25 US dollars to the first person that can give me a working and white-list fixed BIOS using the following information:

Hey Madmax,

here is the PM.

I am sorry, but your bios is a not a HP Compaq Bios.
ADDCC wont work. But it is an Insyde BIOS -> EzH2O can edit it.
Its a little bit different to hack, but its possible.

Hey Semi....

In your work with the HP Bioses have you come across the video card whitelist info?
I ask because I installed a 3700m in my 8710w and it is not one of the allowed cards in the bios.
The card "works" but the bios thinks it's a 3600m so the clock and memory speed, Memory amount, voltages etc are all for the 3600m.
I would definitely be willing to compensate you if you think you could get it working correctly for me.... I also have an Intel 5300 wifi card I would like to install.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Been reading this thread and it's been a fascinating thread. My question for the people in this thread is: Has the wireless button issue (aka the blue led turn on/off) been solved for the nc6000 model? I'm planning to purchase Tp-Link TL-WN861N through ebay and use that on the nc6000. Will post my results and let you know how it goes....
