HDD TRANSFER MODE problems, bios update?

Recommended by Wim's BIOS...

Hi,

i have the following problem, i purchased a maxtor 40 gig HDD ( D740XL )
but the performance is bad! i mean really bad! it's so slow The current data transfer mode is UDMA 1 ( UDMA/33 )

I want it to be ATA 133, i don't have ATA ports on my mobo. In the mainboard manual is mentioned that it it only support up to UDMA 33.

I have 2 hdd's on one 80 wire connector cable, the new maxtor on the end of the cable(master), and the old western digital on the middle(slave). Jumpers on both hdd's are set to cableselect.

Now if i boot up the pc, the new maxtor hdd is set to UDMA33, and the old wd on UDMA66.

So maybey i'll have to do a bios update?
Also i can't find a bios update for my bios, it's a chaintech mobo,
but i can't find a model number.

Please can some1 help me to resolve this problem, it kinda pisse me off, because the hdd is sooo slow i hate it.

I also have crashes in windows xp! IRQL LESS OR NOT EQUAL that too pissed me off! Hardware problems!?

Okay i flashed the bios, with the newest update, but still the same.

first drive is UDMA33 in (startup screen) second drive 66

If your mainboard supports only UDMA Mode 1 33 (same as ATA33) and your Maxtor supports ATA133, you have three choices.

1. Get a new motherboard
2. Get a new add-on PCI disc controller
3. Run the Maxtor disk at UDMA Mode 1.

1) UDMA33 is UDMA Mode 2
2) Depending on the used VIA 596 Chip(Southbridge) on your Board it is capable of running UDMA33(596A) or UDMA66(596B) .
3) Use the Maxtor utility to allow only UDMA66 or UDMA33 with your new drive - seems the 133Mode is confusing your Bios or no 80wire cable is used or cable is installed in the wrong way .
4) For a model number search for a sticker containing a model number located around or onto the Bios Flashrom .

I could only find two utilities on the Maxtor site related to changing the reported mode. One was for the Quantum Fireball series and the other was to upgrade UDMA 66 drives to UDMA 100.

Ah, I just read

Describes potential symptoms that may arise when using DiamondMax 6800 (and newer) hard drives on older UDMA/33 Motherboards with an older, Core BIOS.

The self-extracting archive also contains a utility, not just a description.
