One time years ago I had a hard drive dying and Dell Support had me press F1 during the cold boot up. Apparnently it gave Dell enough codes for them to know the problem was indeed the HD and then replace it for me under warranty.

Does anyone know if pressing F1 was unique to a Dell 8200 or is this a test that all BIOS have built in? IF all BIOS has it, is the running of such a test usually F1 or does it vary by the MoBo mfg and BIOS version?

It varies upon the manufacturer and model of the board. also the bios.
Take precautions.
