Owners & Techs Weigh In - Intel P45: CRAPset or CHIPset?

General : Owners & Techs Weigh In - Intel P45: CRAPset or CHIPset?

Thanks for the info on the settings, but I've heard and tried them already. Besides, the MB is dead, about to be buried.

"chipset should be all right"

I agree, it SHOULD. But tell that to the hundreds of people who are having consistently similar problems across different brands. I'm not as deep into this stuff, anymore, but I've seen similar trends before with hardware and software, and it usually comes back to a problem at creation.

Sometimes the problems are widespread and get immediate attention, like the Pentium problem with the decimal point or what ever it was. Intel KNEW about that problem, did a half-assed job fixing it and released the chips, anyway, hoping no one would notice. Boy, were they wrong.

I agree about the OCZ, I'll be the first to say it, any where, OCZ's deceptive trade practices regarding their 'fake' 1066 memory, (and any other manufacturer that doesn't disclose that info), will become a class action law suit in the next few years, as it should. It's disgusting business practices.

I've used Kingston memory for a long time with NEVER a problem. They were my only supplier of laptop memory for over ten years, and when ever my OEM supplier didn't have what I needed I went to Kingston for desktop and server memory.

Even though Kingston makes some 'fake', OC'd from the factory memory, at least they tell the consumer, upfront. OCZ does not.

So, do you have or have you built any P45 boards?

later,
Sony VAIO Motherboard Dead...

Notebook BIOS and other problems : Sony VAIO Motherboard Dead...

I've been trying to find a solution to this on the net for a while.

Basically, a BIOS update went bad, etc... and I'm trying to use Phoenix Bios Crisis on my VAIO FE690P. I've tried all of the normal hotkeys, Fn + B, Win + Esc, etc. with a USB Floppy Drive and there is no activity. My guess is that Sony, in their usual fashion, decided to make it non-standard and proprietary. They also don't like to publish service manuals, either...

Anyone know if Sonys have a hotkey at all or possibly a jumper somewhere on the motherboard?

Stats : 1 Post
1, disassemble the laptop, take out the motherboard. Locate the BIOS chip, un-solder the chip(you will need a hot air gun), and buy a proper programmer and a proper adapter.
SONY BIOS BACKUP

Notebook BIOS and other problems : SONY BIOS BACKUP

i know this is a really a old thread, but if you read this by any chance, would you please share the orignal bios. the fan is so anoying.

jdt05 wrote:

I'm going to use WinPhlash which is what Sony uses to flash the BIOS.

Sony releases a .EXE file. But this is really just an archive, you can look inside it and it says WinPhlash. You can extract the archive and run WinPhlash from their file.

I know somebody with the original BIOS on their machine and I have the utility that Sony uses to flash their systems, although the version I have is the full version that can BACKUP a BIOS.

Sony's version is modified so that it only flashes.

Thanks for your reply BTW, have been waiting for someone to say something constructive.

Stats : 6 Replies

black screen after flashing bios

My motherboard is dead : black screen after flashing bios

Hi i have just flashed the bios on my Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4 m/b with bios F11 it seemed to go fine. I used the bootable cd method of doing it but when the pc rebooted all i get is a black screen with a cursor flashing in the top left. it starts the normal post process but does nothing after listing the devices.
I try to get into the cmos by hitting delete when it boots and it says entering setup but it just goes to the same black screen. If i hit the END key to go into q/flash all that comes up is a box saying POST ERROR and tells me i need to select a profile either default or last success. Both take me to the black screen again.
I have tried removing the battery for a hour or so as well as shorting the cmos clear pins to no avail.

Edit looks like i may have updated with bios for revision 1.1 of the board when mine is 1.0

Any help on this would be appreciated
thanks

Stats : 1 Post

Dumping contents of PCI card BIOS (on expansion ROM) to file

BIOS Utilities & Flash Programs : Dumping contents of PCI card BIOS (on expansion ROM) to file

I believe that PCI cards in computers, eg sound cards, gfx cards, network cards etc sometimes have a writeable area called an Expansion ROM where a BIOS can be kept.

For a research project of mine I need to find a way of dumping the contents of the Expansion ROM of certain PCI devices to a file. I then want to compare this with the contents of the expansion ROM that comes with the card using MD5s or whatever.

I imagine the hard bit will be dumping the contents of the flash BIOS on PCI card to a file. I want to do this for all devices on my laptop. I started off with the sound card. After digging around in Control Panel I found the Device ID, and found it on pcidatabase .com. The only link provided however was a link to a Driver update

I would also like to find out if a card has an Expansion ROM for a BIOS in the first place. If it doesn't I dont want to bother backing up the BIOS for it to file.

Here is one device that I've been working on. ...

Stats : 1 Post

Problem booting Sony Vaio PCG-K415B

Notebook BIOS and other problems : Problem booting Sony Vaio PCG-K415B

Hi, i had given to me a broken Vaio PCG-K415B.
I have no history on the laptop, it had a broken power socket so this was replaced and now i can get into the bios. However any further than that it shuts off.

It came without a hard drive so up till this point i have been trying to boot live disks e.g. linux etc
It begins to boot then shuts off.
I had a spare compatable CPU so tried this and i get the same problem so it is not that, i have tried using just 1 ram stick and swapping the two ports incase of a bad connection with no joy.
I'm assuming its a mobo problem, can anyone suggest anything else i could do?

Thanks

Stats : 1 Post

The driver SIS is automatically installed, and doesn't show 1440x900 resolution. Just I uninstall the SIS driver, the 1440x900 has shown. But when I restart the O.S the driver is automatically installed, and show the message

Video (VGA) and other BIOS/Firmware : ASUS P4S800-MX widescreen patch

Hi bios gurus!

I have a P4S800MX-SE mb with the SIS661FX chipset. Following the instructions i flashed the bios with the modified one you provide and now I can see the 1600x900 resolution selection.

Although, whenever i choose it, the screen goes blank and an "out of range 74.5Khz/60hz" message appears on the screen (LG W2043T connected through VGA cable). I am using the 3.90 drivers version / Windows XP.

Any thoughts?
Thanks!

Stats : 64 Replies

Intel SE440BX-2 wont flash

Other BIOS update issues. : Intel SE440BX-2 wont flash

I think you'll have to find a slower CPU so it'll boot, then you'll be able to flash the latest BIOS with support for the 800Mhz PIII.

Another possibility is according to the errata and update PDF from the Intel site is earlier revisions (there's a ton of revisions of that board!) have issues with the faster CPUs even with the latest BIOS.

The latest BIOS also gives it support for up to 768 meg RAM. If your CPU is a 100Mhz bus you must use 100Mhz (or 100Mhz compatible PC133) RAM.

Stats : 2 Replies

because
a) your monitor doesn't support it.
b) the video bios doesn't support it.
c) the driver doesn't support it.

frankly i don't know. if you want better drivers that use their own modelines (the linux drivers show that it can be done) write SiS and ask them to write proper Windows drivers.

Stats : 8 Replies

Gateway P-171S FX VT-Enable?

In-depth High-tech BIOS section : Gateway P-171S FX VT-Enable?

I was messing around with Phoenix Bios Editor, although i'm not sure how to use it, I saw this string in there..

"Intel Virtualization Technology"
"'When enabled, a VMM can', 0Dh, 'utilize the additional', 0Dh, 'hardware virtualization', 0Dh, 'capabilities provided', 0Dh, 'by this technology.', 0Dh"

I know 100% for sure my CPU supports VT and i'm curious if anyone would be kind enough to either help me out with modifying the bios update file or if I could post it on here if someone could do it much quicker than myself? I don't see much talk of gateway laptop mods but this gateway is a beast and i absolutely love its power ;D

Gateway P-171S FX (Phoenix Bios)

I got a few module loading errors in phoenix bios editor, not sure what it means.

i'd post a link to where i'm hosting my bios but apparently I can't yet lol.. i can PM if someone is interested in helping.

Stats : 1 Post

ASUS P4S8X-MX dead because of CrashFree BIOS feature itself

My motherboard is dead : ASUS P4S8X-MX dead because of CrashFree BIOS feature itself

I turned on my computer yesterday, then appears a text on my monitor:

"Bad Bios Checksum. Starting recovery..."

Seems that my BIOS is corrupted, I placed the motherboard CD to my CD drive. Then I read through the progress, there is a text:

"Flashing P5XXXXXX.ROM." What the? My real BIOS is P4S8XMX.ROM! CrashFree Bios has flashed wrong bios to my motherboard!

After restarting, that was my last time to see my computer output a screen again to monitor. My monitor was black, while fan is spinning and CD Drive starting to spin up repeatedly.

What I should do now? Is Blind Flash BIOS will works in this case? Or some other methods that will works?

Thanks in advance.

Stats : 1 Post

Notebook BIOS and other problems : Mod Asus G1 (original version) BIOS to support 4GB RAM

I too just ran into this limitation. I installed 64 bit Win7 and upgraded to 4GB of RAM to only be shocked to learn the limitations of the G1 BIOS.

I don't know if it is possible to mod the BIOS to add the capability, but I'm hoping it is and would like know either way.

Stats : 2 Replies

How to flush BIOS on Lenovo S10-2?

Notebook BIOS and other problems : How to flush BIOS on Lenovo S10-2?

I need to make some changes related to wireless card id checks.

I found an advise online "to use phlash16 under DOS with the /BU option" I found phlash.exe, but when I run it in true DOS environment it says: "Can't open file PLATFORM.BIN"

Where do I find PLATFORM.BIN?
Or maybe that means that this is the wrong utility for this laptop?

Stats : 1 Post

Insyde BIOS bootblock recovery- some new info - some queries

Notebook BIOS and other problems : Insyde BIOS bootblock recovery- some new info - some queries

stripwax wrote:

Patching a floppy disk boot sector so that the entry point is at 7c80 actually works - I tried it with a Caldera DR-DOS floppy image. My Benq laptop (joybook 5000u, insyde MobilePro bios version 4, intel ICH4 mobo) gets as far as the "Loading Caldera DR-DOS" message (indicating the floppy boot sector has been executed and loaded the system from floppy!) - but then it stalls. So my next guess is that a lot of BIOS services are not yet available when getting here from the bios bootblock crisis recovery mode. Not a regular BIOS boot so programs that rely on regular BIOS services might not work

So what I think I *really* need is a 16-bit bios flasher that doesn't need any bios services other than Int13h and Int10h, and doesn't need any DOS services either

I think if you can debug where it hangs it would be helpful. Maybe a 'debug print/symbol/with backtrace? version of the open source dos with source code?'.

I think it hangs because it tries to load the CLOCK (Date and Time).

When I worked with pre-y2k systems, systems that did not set their clock correctly, ie: cmos is set to 1995. the boot would 'freeze' like what you have. while if I fixed the cmos back to 2002 or something then it boots fine.

Maybe linux is the way to go? at least be able to load grub/lilo(?) first would be best...

Stats : 18 Replies

How to disable WiFi miniPCI check for vendor/product id?

Notebook BIOS and other problems : How to disable WiFi miniPCI check for vendor/product id?

I recently bought Lenovo netbook S10-2. Original Broadcom WiFi card doesn't work in FreeBSD, and also isn't stable in Windows. So I bought well supported atheros-based card.

When system boots with the new card I get the message: "Unauthorized Wireless network card is plugged in. Power off and remove it."

From one discussion on thinkwiki I learned that this is an IBM tradition to have a white list of VID/PIDs in BIOS.

I tried to modify NVRAM (set one bit) the way the program in the above discussion does, but it didn't help.

BIOS name is 1AEC21WW(v1.12).

How can I get information which, if any, bit in NVRAM allows to disable the wifi check?

Stats : 1 Post

Advent 9509 / Foxconn G44M / cant flash

Other BIOS update issues. : Advent 9509 / Foxconn G44M / cant flash

I am trying to flash this MB. The reason is I have installed Windows 7 and need the latest BIOS with memory mapping to fully use 8GB RAM.

I downloaded the utility AFUDOS from Foxconn website and tried to flash from DOS boot disk but received error message something like BIOS does not support AFUDOS update.

Do you know if I need to change an MB jumper to allow this or do you think the BIOS has been locked and can it be unlocked?

Also is there a better way to flash it eg from within Windows?

Any help very appreciated, thanks.

Stats : 1 Post

D201GLY2A goes wrong with LG W2243S (1980x1080)

Video (VGA) and other BIOS/Firmware : D201GLY2A goes wrong with LG W2243S (1980x1080)

Thanks! Yesterday found a problem.
When installing sis driver showing the directory where it is the maximum resolution will be only 1680x1050 - don't know why.
After installing by opening setup file in the drier directory - everything is ok, and i can get resolution 1980x1080 or even higher.

Yesterday I've uninstall sis driver, and windows started to work with standard vga controller (something of that kind :). After starting Camfrog and choosing video settings, I've got and error (instead of sis driver crash), some kind of 3d bla-bla bla, and suggest me to set older visualization. After that cam is working correctly and camfrog works correctly too.

It interesting, because i could not set this camfrog option when using a sis video driver?, because of its failure.

Simple Utility to Flash Bios Chip though the Parallel Port

BIOS Services : Simple Utility to Flash Bios Chip though the Parallel Port

Which chip technology? Parallel/LPC/FWH/SPI? There are multiple solutions for all chip technologies out there, some of them easy to build, others require complicated PCBs and expensive parts.

Easiest would be to pick an existing opensource project and use it (or extend it if you need something special).

For SPI, the RayeR (Martin Rehak) stuff is neat and I heard it works fine. You can either use RayeR's SPIPGM or the patch for flashrom(.org) which is floating around.

For LPC (and to some extent, FWH) you can use the Milksop or LPC^2 projects. No idea how much code/schematics are still available on the net. There is some preliminary patch for flashrom which would enable you to use that hardware. No idea where you can find that one, though. Maybe ask.

For Parallel, you can either abuse old network cards for flashing, or you can use some parport/AVR thing (google for "serprog flashrom") or build something yourself.

Neither of the solutions above is sold anywhere, it's all real do-it-yourself stuff.

Stats : 2 Replies

Question regarding settings

What does this BIOS or Jumper setting do? : Question regarding settings

Hey,

I have a P5Q3 Deluxe motherboard.

I'm trying to change my bios settings to the following ones -

Quote:

* Advanced BIOS Features :
o HDD S.M.A.R.T. Capability [Enabled]
o CPU Enhanced Halt [Disabled]
o CPU Thermal Monitor [Disabled]
o CPU EIST Function [Disabled]
* Integrated Pereprhals :
o USB Keyboard Function [Enabled]
o USB Mouse Function [Enabled]
o SATA RAID/AHCI Mode [AHCI]
o Onboard SATA/IDE Device [AHCI]
* Power Management Setup :
o HPET Mode [64-bit Mode]

Now when I enter to my BIOS setup, I do not see this options or anything similar. Anyone has any idea what are the parallel functions to those in the P5Q3 bios settings area?

Thanks a lot!!
SONY vaio Phoenix BIOS backup

Notebook BIOS and other problems : SONY vaio Phoenix BIOS backup

Good day,

I've a sony vaio laptop, vgn nr21s/s wich comes with a phoenix BIOS, R1150J9.

I want to create a backup of this BIOS, just in case, as SONY haven't released the BIOS, or an update.

I've used the Universal BIOS Backup Toolkit, which has generared a ROM image, which, when looked at in UltraEdit, looks like a BIOS image.

The problem is the Phoenx Flash tool - winphlash - needs some configuration appended to the BIOS file in order to work.

I have access to another Sony BIOS, R0131J9, which has the configuration information on it, but I don't know if the information is specific to an individual BIOS or can be applied to all.

Can anyone shed light on this for me?

Thanking you in anticipation,

dead.

Stats : 1 Post

BIOS OEM: Intel 865G/GV, (3004-123.003)
Chipset: Intel 2570 rev 2

Manufacturer: Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG
Motherboard: Unknown

Reason: SO I can fit a SAPPHIRE HD 2400 PRO (AGP - 512MB DDR2 Memory) Video Card.

At present I fit this Video Card and I can't boot anymore.

BIOS Utilities & Flash Programs : Need Intel BIOS Editor

Hi all,

Could someone point me to a tool/method to edit an Intel BIOS (CO96510J.86A.6094.2009.0406.1239) on a DQ965CO Mobo?

I already have the .BIO file downloaded from the Intel site and was able to flash it successfully.

On a related note, anyone know of a windows based tool that can change the BIOS values? I swear I saw a console based utility a few years ago with an ASCII-gfx interface that could change some settings...

Thanks.

Stats : 1 Post
