Try peeling away the "Compaq partnumber" stickers in the RAM area, look for Jumpers:

PAD501 & PAD502

This is the most the compaq technicians will know about your particular laptop. Perhaps an ASC may know how to fix this problem, but they probably end up just replacing the mobo.

Just an update, also, take a look on the top of the PCB, it may have an area for a PLCC type ROM, I just got done working with a dead BIOS on a 1600

The PCB came orgininally with a TSOP on the bottom of the board, the bootblock was useless, removed the TSOP ROM, installed a 2mbit 5v PLCC on the top and it works,

If you can get someone to sell you and program a 32 pin PLCC ROM you can use that.

www.badflash.com offers PLCC bios replacement chips.

Order (if possible) a winbond 2mbit 5v chip you may need to send them the bios image.

when my computer was working i made a backup of the working bios and boot block using uniflash, is it good enough for a bios image to send to badflash.com.

or would you know any location from where i can get the bios for a compaq 1690.
