I have an HP Pavilion 780n and want to upgrade my CPU from Pentium 4 1.8 GHz with a 400MHz fsb to 2.4 GHz or 2.8 GHz. I tried the 2.8 and the PC powers up, but nothing comes up on the monitor. I did some looking around and found the hppavilionsupport@yahoogroups.com group. They pointed me to this forum.

The current 1.8 GHz processor specs are:

The CPU I was lookling to upgrade is at PowerLeap; I used their online INSPECs app and get the following info for the current motherboard:

L2 Cache Size : 256 KBytes Stepping : D0
Trace Width : 0.18
Microcode : 2Eh
Instruction Sets : MMX, SSE, SSE2

The recommended upgrades are:

Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz 400MHz 478pin 512K CPU OEM
400 Front Side Bus

Intel Pentium 4 2.5GHz 400MHz 478pin 512K CPU OEM
400 Front Side Bus

Embarassed Can anyone let me know why the 2.8 does not work? I assume it has to do with the BIOs. Is there a BIOs out there that I can upgrade to? Can someone let me know if it is possible to modify the current BIOs to support the 2.8 GHz CPU? Thanks!

Your current CPU is a Willamette... your board may not support Northwoods...
