Hi all, would appreciate a point in the right direction.
PC from Tiny and has intergrated sound. CAme with Windows ME, after upgrade to XP the USB freexes system when device is connected, and media player sound has bad crackle (for example, with visualizations in media player, when using Explorer and looking at files).

I havetTotally confused myself on what update I need (my bios ID doesn't seem normal), here is BIOS Agent report:

As said it's an OEM-Version for Tiny computers. Drivers from the MSI standard version might work; using a standard MSI Bios may render your board useless so be careful!

Thanks for the replies.
OK, so now I'm nervous, is it worth me attempting a bios update? Is an update likely to repair sound issues or would I be better of buying a new PCI sound card and disable the integrated one . I'm not so bothered about USB issues as i have added USB 2.0 ports on a PCI card.

Sound is my only real issue (that I am aware of).

Drivers? the only drivers you'll need are the chipset drivers from VIA (4-in-1 almost any version you prefer, i'd go for the latest) and Soundblaster PCI (AudioPCI/64/128) drivers from Creative for the onboard sound.

i took a look into the AMIBIOS version 1.1 from the MSI site. it's the same bios the you have (even the premarketing name of the KT133 is there ;)). you can still update your bios to a later version.

thanks again, have followed your link for files.
Link takes me to 1 file to update bios
and 3 driver files:
1 - For VT82C686A/.... Audio Driver
2 - All on-board Creative CT5880 chipset mainboards (optional)
3 - All VIA based chipset mainboard.

Just to clarify, should I update BIOS first, and then use drivers to update sound and mainboard?

ViA 4-in-1 4.43 (ViA recommends them for old systems..*shrugg*)

and do some tests. if there are still problems: bios next. if this is not the cure you may also try to make a clean install of your OS.

tried using drivers from your original post link.

lastst 4 in 1 installed fine.
Viasound would not install saying it could not find "any supported hardware"
I will try the link in you last post and see if this works.

unfortunately the driver:
"CT5880 Drivers"
made my sound disappear (just faint crackle and no other sound), so restored back.

I had better recap as I'm getting bit confused:
I have installed VIA4in1_MB
I have installed via_hyperionpro_v511a

Installation of Viasound75 (VIA_AC97_4150D) failed, saying could not find supported hardware
Installation of "CT5880 Drivers" failed as above.

Am I still on the right track!

look, MSI made a version with a PCI soundchip onboard (that's a Creative CT5580 AudioPCI (former Ensoniq ES137x)) and a version where they use the VIA Southbridge's build-in AC'97 sound.
For the Creative driver: have you checked the sound volume (in Windows volume control->Options->Properties)?

For your mainboard you have to install:
- a driver for the Creative CT5880 (either the version from the MSI site or the one from the Creative site)
- EITHER the VIA 4-in-1 drivers OR the VIA Hyperion drivers (VIA suggests to install the 4-in-1 drivers. Either way, both drivers support your hardware)

The drivers on the MSI site are just the ones they got from VIA and Creative a while ago. Since MSI stopped selling and supporting this board a while ago, you'll find ancient drivers on their site. VIA and Creative have more recent drivers for their hardware.
Please keep one thing in mind: don't throw everything at your hardware you can get your hands on. First read what all this stuff is you're downloading and then make a decision if it's worth installing it.

So back to your problem: the crackling. Check the cabeling first. Take a headphone and connect it. Is the crackling sound still there? Go to volume control->options->properties->recording and mute the microphone input.
