merry new chrismas and happy year,

i connected a WD 120GB harddrive to the board to serve as a new companion to a 20GB hard drive which works fine. bios got stuck after writing UDMA and before writing size of new drive. tried alternate jumper configuration on new drive. this resulted in the bios detecting a 32GB drive, however windows didnt seem to recognize the drive at all.

low down:
after looking through the MSI site i found a list of bios updates for my board (MS6199VA) ranging from version 3.0 to version 3.5 all of whom had dates (26 oct 1999 to 2 oct 2000) prior to my bios date (8 oct 2000 (or maybe its 10 aug 2000 who knows)). but my bios version is only 1.6.
in short, my bios version (1.6) is dated later than all the msi bios versions (3.0-3.5). i dont want to take any unnecessary chances when flashing my bios. i dont know if they have a big mess down at msi when it comes to bios versions. i tried their livebios utility but it doesnot support my mobo.
ive emailed them and received no helpful human reply.

should i just download their latest bios version and flash it? or
any better ideas ?

W6199VC8 indicates an OEM-Bios.
Is it possible to specify the system builder/computer manufacturer your board came from/was installed ?
If the OEM manufacturer has nothing newer then we have to use our utility to patch your Bios .

oops, what an oversight on my part.
i think this board was manufactured by MSI for a little computer company called Compaq. ill try to contact them. its hard to find what im looking for in their site (especially now that they joined forces with HP). ill update everyone on the results of my search (if anyone is interested).

thanks for pointing out that it was an OEM Bios

peace and love

You need to know the model number of your computer and the series it came from. Presario Desktop and similar stuff is needed .

Please make sure it's really a Bios problem and not a Master/Slave or cabling misconfiguration.
Check the tables on both HDD for master/slave jumpers - some HDD manufacturers use a single master setting but this only works without slave.
Make sure your cable is connedted this way: blue end to mainboard and black end to master device

thank you for your directions

im now in the process of (waiting for) receiving support from compaq/hp

this appears to be a bios problem. various master/slave configurations, 1/2 drives. my bios always gets stuck when it tries to identify the size of the hard drive.

will update everyone on compaq progress (if any)

be well

dont be consumed by consumption

here is an update from the front.

it took a little while to figure out what computer i have. it appears that my compaq is not one of the standard ones listed in the hp/compaq website. after a few back-and-forth communiques with hp support we arrived at the conclusion that i have a compaq EY series computer (a model issued in some parts of europe and the middle east (umm, makes sense, cause i bought this computer in israel)

some nice guy on the hp forums managed to find me a bios upgrade for my old-weird computer. this upgrade fixed (i hope) an annoying bug in my computer (it used to hang every once in a while, unexplainably), but did not resolve my original problem, namely, bios support for big hard drives. support in hp israel 's only advice was to get a ide controller card, since no new bios upgrades are available through them.

so basically im back where i started.

my options, as i see them (please correct me if im wrong):
1. pray to god hope for the best (didnt always work in the past)
2. get an ide controller card (costs $)
3. get a bios upgrade from esupport (costs $) their site claims two things:
a. theve got the perfect bios upgrade for me (that would support big hds)
b. satisfaction guaranteed (i guess this means refund if the upgrade doesnt do what it supposed to; i asked them this as a direct question. their (automatic) reply stated satisfaction guaranteed)
c. 30.00$
4. try a bios upgrade from ye bios experts

what are the risks/rewards,negative/positive aspects of each one of the options above?

or in short what should i do next?

below is the bios agent output after the little new bios upgrade (you can see that the date and version have changed:

Program: eSupport.com BIOS Agent Version 3.41
BIOS Date: 11/03/00
BIOS Type: Award Modular BIOS v4.51PG
BIOS ID: 11/03/2000-692-596-W977-2A6LGM4EC

1. pray to god hope for the best (didnt always work in the past)
Pro: demonstrates to your God your faith in him/her/it.
Con: does not upgrade your BIOS to support large disks.
2. get an ide controller card (costs $)
Pro: May support faster transfer rates than motherboard hardware, or even support SATA and/or RAID. No messing with BIOS flashing.
Con: Costs $
3. get a bios upgrade from esupport (costs $) their site claims two things:
a. they've got the perfect bios upgrade for me (that would support big hds)
b. satisfaction guaranteed (i guess this means refund if the upgrade doesnt do what it supposed to; i asked them this as a direct question. their (automatic) reply stated satisfaction guaranteed)
c. 30.00$

Pro: Guaranteed satisfaction. They said so. Plus you help keep someone in employment.
Con: 30.00$ or, if not satisfied, cost of postage.
4. try a bios upgrade from ye bios experts
Pro: Free
Con: No money back if not satisfied. Satisfaction not guaranteed.
