Doesn't it have the typical lid you simply unscrew off?

Known issue with some Compaq laptops. I've had that very same issue with my Armada 110 and solved it by connecting an external keyboard, turned it on, hit F10 at POST, save&exit, shutdown, disconnect the external keyboard, and voilà... It fixed the problem.

Sounds like a corrupt BIOS

Have you tried disconnecting HD and CD except the FD to try a possible reflash if the latter is successfully accessed?

I have a feeling you'll have better luck Googling for the info...

Why don't you tell us what mobo you have, what you've done, what versions of flashers you're using, etc.?

You might be able to get into bootblock mode (Recovery mode) with the appropriate jumper...

Have you tried clearing CMOS just in case?

I'd try getting it flashed first...

Be careful... full speed implies full power which your mobo's VRM may not be able to provide...

The only solution could be to piggy-back flash or simply carefully replace the BIOS chip (not at all easy).

Have you tried emailing HP?

If your screen boots blank, then it isn't an OS problem... Try flashing to the latest BIOS with your previous processor.

FYI, I've had a 3.2V K6-233 working just fine on an old PCCHIPS VX board at 3.3V (single-voltage). Just be careful with the VRM because it does get really hot... I had it working at 3x75=225MHz (better performance than 66.6x3.5=233MHz) with good EDO SIMMs :D The board still works fine, after 5 years...
