I have a PC Chips M861G V1.6A motherboard. It is supposed to to have an AMI bios on it. Somehow it has an award bios. I need to flash it with the AMI Bios that is available from PC Chips to solve all of the problems I have been having. When I try to flash it I get "Error 20 - Cannot reprogram flash rom." Then it says Disable USB. I have tried to flash it using the /L command and it tries to flash 3 times with the same results.

I am thinking it could be becuase I am trying to flash an award bios with an AMI flash utility and bios file. Is there a way to get rid of the award bios file and flash it with the correct AMI bios??

What is your current Bios-ID ?

Maybe you got an ECS-version of your board with Award Bios ?

Error 20 usually means the fashprog is not able to identify the installed Flashrom chip or it is write protected by jumper or Bios option.

I also have this motherboard with an athlon 64 3000+ and a gig of memory, and I've been having problems with it ever since I bought it.

i've run memtest86+ (the 64 bit version) and come up with hundreds of thousands of errors, and i have no idea why.. i feel like i've wasted a couple hundred bucks on this board and processor and memory

the board has M861G V1.6A printed on it, but sisoft sandra identifies it as an ECS K8M800-8237, but i can't find updated BIOSes for either of these boards.. sandra also says that the voltage is set incorrectly, but the bios i currently have doesn't have a control for the CPU voltage

my symptoms are constant crashes, BSODs, it's a nightmare..

any help would be appreciated

It can be an OEM version of PcChips M861G for other vendor.
ECS K8M800-8237 is a very different motherboard.

It's an OEM version of ECS Elitegroup K8M800-M2.
Do you have a brand system? Where do you bought it?

So it's the version 2.0 of K8M800-M2.
http://www.smksuperstore.com/catalog/vi ... p?ID=12854
Or PcChips M861G, but the page says "Mfr Part Number: MB-871G V1.5":
http://www.smksuperstore.com/catalog/vi ... p?ID=13395
BTW PcChips and ECS are the same company and they share a lot of BIOS for his motherboards.
Ask them for BIOS support:

I have the same problem with the same board. Same issue when I tried to flash.
My problem was a very unstable operation when I tried to run the MB with Athlon Xp 3400+ 64bit, with a Kingston Value Ram KVR400/512R.
I solved the problem by dumping the Kingston Value Ram, and replaced it with a PNY D512MPC32OPT. The problem went away.

PC chips finally called. The technician told me I got a MB from someone that they believe had "forced" the Award Bios into the PCChips M861 v1.6 MB. He said he couldn't help but suggested my CPU may be altered. I then called AMD. They ran the serial number check and confirmed the CPU is genuine.

I saw also the AMI chip on the MB.

Can someone tell me if it is possible to "FORCE" AWARD BiOS software on to an AMI BIOS chip?

KVR400/512R sounds like registered RAM - it might have has trouble to run as non-registered. But I may be wrong as I don't know the specs of this ram.
