Don't ask how to over-clock.

I have an old socket A Matsonic board: MS8127C+. Here is the BIOS information:

BIOS Date: 01/18/02
BIOS Type: Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG
BIOS ID: 01/18/2002-8363-686-MS8127CC-00
OEM Sign-On: MS8127C series 01/18/2002
Chipset: VIA 82C305 rev 3
Superio: VIA 686 rev 64 found at port 7h
CPU Type: Unknown CPU Type
CPU Speed: 1800 Mhz
CPU Max: 500 Mhz
BIOS ROM In Socket: Yes
BIOS ROM Size: 256K
Memory Installed: 128 MB
Memory Maximum: 512 MB

I found a BIOS update on the Matsonic web site and ran BIOS Agent again. It now says:

BIOS Date: 09/04/02
BIOS Type: Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG
BIOS ID: 09/04/2002-8363-686-K7VZAC-00
OEM Sign-On: MS8127C+ Series 09/04/2002
Chipset: VIA 82C305 rev 3
Superio: VIA 686 rev 64 found at port 7h
CPU Type: AMD Athlon(tm) XP
CPU Speed: 1800 Mhz
CPU Max: 500 Mhz
BIOS ROM In Socket: Yes
BIOS ROM Size: 256K
Memory Installed: 128 MB
Memory Maximum: 512 MB

The new BIOS recognizes that I have an Athlon XP 2200+ in there, but it is very unstable and crashes often. Is there any way to get this CPU working with this motherboard? There are no underclocking options in the BIOS settings.

Thanks.

After your BIOS upgrade, are you reinstalled the OS?
A repair installation can be enought.

I don't have an OS on there yet. It is not stable enough to do that. It crashes because my processor is not supported by my motherboard. I am trying to put together some spare parts I had into a new system. I updated the BIOS in an attempt to get my motherboard to work with my 2200+ Athlon XP, but it didn't seem to do the trick. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Your BIOS should support it:
AMD Athlon XP+ 1500+.1600+.1700+.1800+.1900+.2000+.2100+.2200+.2400+.2600+
But Matsonic FAQ says:
What is the fastest processor that MS8127C+ 266 can support reliably?
AMD Thunderbird , 0.18u , 100/133MHz, Athlon 650 MHz ~ 1400 MHz
AMD Palomino , 0.18u , 133MHz, Athlon XP 1500+ ~ XP 2100+
Duron : 650MHz ~ 1200MHz
Maybe this information is outdated.
