Sincere apologies if this is in the wrong place or if I have missed a relevant reply in another forum!
I'm helping a friend to add extra RAM on an MS-5158 motherboard. According to the manual, the maximum that this board supports is 256Mbyte. He already has 166Mbyte in 2 DIMMS.
I have located a possible BIOS upgrade, but the README file does not give any indication on whether this is likely to allow a larger RAM onboard.
I want to add as much memory as possible for my friend - the board has space for an extra DIMM over and aboev what he already has and I would like to have added a 512 Mbyte DIMM for him.
Any advice or suggestions greatly welcomed.
Thanks.

Highly unlikely. Memory support is generally a chipset issue.
And since this is a Pentium-class system, there is no possible way it would recognize a 512MB DIMM in any case.

Flash your BIOS at your own risk.
