Motherboard : D865PERL
OS : Win XP Home
Upgrade from v08 to v21

I used the BIOS upgrade program from Intel which runs in windows. After some beeps (which they explain are normal) WinXP will not start. I get the message: "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device"

I have the installation CD for win XP to boot from, and it gets properly booted (to the blue DOS screens), but it will not recognize an existing installation of the OS, it wants to do a fresh install (I think).

I have tried shutting off the machine (after reading that this may solve the problem, but under trepidation, since it was explained that shutting off power during the upgrade could be catastrophic).

I have looked at the BIOS settings and it shows that the version name is the upgrade.

Ritchie suggested loading BIOS defaults (in another thread).

- Load defaults
- Save and Exit
- Windows XP welcome screen
- Windows XP desktop
- "The Express BIOS Update has been updated sucessfully"

WOO HOO. It worked. Thank-you so much Ritchie!

Is this glitch something Intel should know about? Do they accept problem reports?

No, CMOS clear is standard procedure after a bios flash. I think it's even in the readme file that comes with the bios.
