My original bios is

Code: Select all

I flashed it with this

Code: Select all

         BIOS-Info, c't/Andreas Stiller, V. 1.5 10/00
 Computer ID : FC, SubTyp: 02, BIOS-Level: 116

 INT-13h BIOS Extension: nein

but hey, this also doesn't support int 13h. I have a maxtor 91021u2 of 10 Gbytes (16383 cylinders, 16 heads, 63 sectors) that doesn't play nicely with partition magic.
I also used extbios from http://web.inter.nl.net/hcc/J.Steunebri ... m#Int13ext, and it says exactly the same.

This website relates i440BX-W977TF-2A69KC39C-00 with Chaintech 6btm. Following this website the latest driver is apparently from 2000. I also found http://www.bios-drivers.com/drivers/114/114035.htm, which seems to be for the 6btm, but is this enough identification? Is this the right driver, or do I need a different one. It seems that chaintech has deleted their old drivers from the website. I found pointers on the net that didn't work anymore.

edit: added 10GB in topic title.

Sounds more like a problem with the memory sticks used. Run memtest86 on them.

so this is merely about partition magic than on recognition in the bios? is the drive detected correctly in the bios?

Run memtest86 on them.
I will do it this evening, as I see this is taking a lot of time.

If I remember correctly, the error has some relationship with bios.
When I boot my system, all my four drives are recognized. I use the option AUTO in the BIOS. How can I see if they are correctly recognized? One partition is ntfs, one partion is fat32. I load partition magic from a boot-CDROM, so it is indeed loaded in RAM, I think.

It also strikes me that the new bios version apparently doesn't support INT 13h.

I'd say it's either a Partition Magic problem or one of your drives has a discmanager installed and that's the problem.
Does PM say which HDD has the Discmanager installed ?

enter the bios and use 'ide hdd autodetect' to insert the hdds into the bios instead of letting them get autodetected everytime you boot. take a look at the capacity when the bios detects the 10GB hdd. there should be no problem at all.

Yes, disk 1, and if they start counting from 1, disk 1 is not the 10Gb disk, but some Quantor of +/- 4GB.
The 10Gb disk is primary slave.

I think you need to kick out all the disks and leave only the 10GB disk in as master, then boot from the CD and let PM do its thing. PM and diskmanagers are not good friends in my experience and I think it gets confused by the DM software rubbish.

[seems that my yesterdays post did not arrive]
Run memtest86 on them.
After the 3th pass the prog cold not detect an error. I think it is OK.
use 'ide hdd autodetect'
I stepped through, but I don't know which option I have to choose. I am presented with 1-2(Y)-3 options. I assume these options each present a different geometry :?:
I think you need to kick out all the disks and leave only the 10GB disk in as master
I will remember this. I think this is not the most elegant option, because it obliges me to open the barebone each time I have to adminsister my disks. I can also use MaxBlast from Maxtor--which I did--and this helps, but it is not a purists solution. :)

2 (Y) is LBA. you can check that in the hdd options screen afterwards, too.

The reason Partition Magic complains is probably because you were booting the Partition Magic boot disk without letting the hard drive boot first and load the disk manager overlay. Given that you're booting Partition Magic from CD-ROM, it's probably impossible to have the overlay load first before booting the CD since the last overlay I worked with only supported booting an operating system from a floppy disk after the overlay. It may be possible to boot a DOS floppy disk with CD-ROM support after loading the overlay and then running Partition Magic manually- that is, if the version of Partition Magic on the CD runs on DOS. Actually, if I remember correctly, I believe it's possible to install a disk manager directly onto a floppy disk with DOS so that you don't have to boot the hard drive first to get a floppy to work. Anyway, in all cases, good luck!

Hm, this is a good idea! I'll look for an bootdisk image with cd-rom support. Maybe I can try this http://www.bootdisk.com/readme.htm#cdromdos

How (where) are the drives connected to the PC (Master/Slave/IDE port sequence)?
