I want to upgrade my BIOS to support an 80 GB HDD but it appears that its stakeholders have already deemed it obsolete... and are not providing any upgrades for it

BIOS Type: Award Modular BIOS v4.51PG
BIOS ID: 02/10/1999-i440BX-W977EF-ATC-6230C-00

Oops! It is there now, renamed (A-Trend ATC-6230 V1.0).zip

I would be careful about using any file from there; the "104" is the latest "10x" and you already have it; the "202" version actually says:

Code: Select all

01/08/1999-i440BX-W977EF-ATC-6230C-00
ATC-6230 VER:1.0 03 WB
As always, flash at your own risk.

The one at my signature is patched and should support HDD up to 137GB.
The BIOS message is slightly changed so that you will know which version you are running.

No this patched BIOS isnt functioning properly... it hangs as soon as I access
1. The Standard CMOS Setup
2. IDE HDD Auto Detection -> Primary Slave (After detecting Primary Master successfully)

I have to use Ctrl+Alt+Del to reboot the system... thats the only thing I can do

infact on seeing it more closely i have noted that it is not even detecting the primary master properly...

earlier in the table it use to show the sizes of the three options.... but now it shows 0 for all of them

It's worth either clearing CMOS or selecting defaults just to check, but this patch does not fix all bugs :( , so an alternative is to try patching the BIOS with apple_rom's patcher. I can try that a bit later or you can try yourself if you want to get stuck in..... it's at www.rom.by

I dont know anything about BIOS patching.... so could you please do it for me again with this other software you're telling....
I tried clearing the CMOS and also loading defaults... but no it looks like a bug only

can some other BIOS be used instead of this one... i mean is there any concept of compatible BIOSes... or are BIOSes ony very specific to the respective motherboads

http://www.wimsbios.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=15829
infact in this link it looks like the gentleman faced the same problem with the patch BIOS...

Ah, ajzchips had a simlar experience. Probably that explains why I didn't find it in the list of working patched BIOSes...I had a similar experience with MSI MS6119 but the user decided that as he could use the full capacity of the drive it was worth the hassle of disconnecting the drive when he needed to go into CMOS setup. If you can't even get all drives identified, that is rather different.
That was before the patch was developed.

You can now find a file (A-Trend ATC-6230 V1.0 bp).zip at the "untested" link in my signature. Let us know how it went...
