BIOS Auto Detect does not detect the new Samsung 80 GB HD I purchased. The new HD is connected via IDE.

Steps taken sofar:
Flashed the BIOS to upgrade from V3.3 to V3.7 with rom file and flash utility as found on the MSI Website for the MS-5169 board (info on other forums indicated that 3.7 would support disks up to 120 GB). BIOS V3.7 however does not detect the HD. When I strap the HD to limit its capacity to 32 GB, then BIOS V 3.7 does properly detect the HD!

Next step: find a BIOS that does support 80GB ( ..... help !)

Details of my system are:

Board: MS-5169 V4.0, Microstar International
CPU: AMD-K6 (tm) 3D processor 450 MHz
Chipset: ALi M1541 rev 4

OS: Win 98 SE Version 4.10.2222

BIOS Type: American Megatrends
BIOS Date: 09/08/00
BIOS ID: see subject title
BIOS OEM Signon: A5169MS V3.7 090800

Thanks in advance for your suggestions

Denniss,

Thanks for the prompt reply.

I already received a 3.83 beta version from MSI support, but could not flash the BIOS with it, because the flash utility MSI provided together with it didn't recognize my chipset.

So don't bother looking for the 3.83 version on your disks (unless you have a special patched version ! ).

I didn't try to flash 3.83 with another flash utility, because I don't know which utility is compatible with what BIOS version and chipset.

So if you can advise me with what flash utility I can safely upgrade to 3.83, that would be great. For upgrade to 3.7, MSI provided me with AMIFL826.exe. Can I use this one?

Thanks, Eric

Try with Amif826A instead.
I can send you the file if you need it.
More than 100,000 BIOS strings in my database just now!

Or better use Uniflash - should work without problems.

BIOS V3.83 flashed succesfully and BIOS now recognizes the 80 GB HDD ! Also Win 98 recognized the disk. I subsequently installed Win XP on the 80 GB disk without any problems. In addition my PC runs stable after the BIOS flash.

So ..... THANKS

Eric
