I'm trying to install an 80GB HDD in my old computer and it stalls during the boot process, presumably due to the Award bios HDD size detection limitation. If anyone could supply a patched bios to overcome this I would be gratefull. The Bios Agent information is:

Program: eSupport.com BIOS Agent Version 3.45
BIOS Date: 06/26/98
BIOS Type: Award Modular BIOS v4.51PG
BIOS ID: 06/26/1998-SiS-5591-SMC6-2A5IKJ19C
OEM Sign-On: V.591A B01 06-26-1998
Chipset: SiS 5591 rev 2
Superio: SMC 669 rev 2 found at port 3F0h
OS: Win98
CPU: AMD-K6(tm) 3D processor 299 MHz
BIOS ROM In Socket: Unknown
BIOS ROM Size: Unknown
Memory Installed: 255 MB
Memory Maximum: Unknown

Thanks

Dear AJZchips,

Thanks for the patched bios but unfortunately it doesn't seem to work. I flashed it with awdflash and the flash process seemed to work OK without errors but the 80GB drive still causes the machine to stall. Using the patched bios with the old drive gives a size of 0 during auto detect but the machine boots normally and the full drive is seen and accessible from Windows. I've now reflashed the bios with the original bios file and everything is back to normal.

Hoping you can help,

Charles.

Patched differently this time, but a lot riskier. The file ends in "BP" now.

Flash at your own risk. I shall not be held responsible if something fails.

Note: before flashing, try to set HDD parameters manually for your 80GB with the previous version of the patched BIOS.

Unfortunately still no luck with alternative bios. This time the machine doesn't stall but auto detects 80GB as 33816MB but shows it as 2114MB in the system config. summary at end of POST. I can partition and format it but 2.1GB is a lot less than 80GB. I tried entering the paramaters manually in CMOS setup as Cyls 9729, heads 255 and sects 63 LBA but this just results in "primary hard disk failure" early in POST. I tried manual entry with the first patched bios but I can't remember whether the result was system lockup or or "primary hard disk failure" but in any case it didn't work.

1. Have you checked your HDD manufacturer's site for alternative settings?
2. What are you FDISKing and FORMATting it with? Version?
3. Have you checked whether you have the 32GB clip on your HDD?

Thanks for your reply. In answer to your questions:

1. I have tried the alternative settings (from WD web site) with no success. Actually I've tried it as primary master only, primary master with slave present, and as slave.

2. The FDISK version used is dated 05-18-00 8:35a. This I believe is the correct one for large drives. The format version is the one from the WIN98 install disk.

3. In this case I think the 32GB clip is achieved through the alternative settings.

The model of the HDD is: WD800JB-00JJA0.

Try using a more powerful utility like Partition Magic.
