This computer is an NEC powermate ES 5250
with MSI motherboard MS6131 ver:3

W6131P2 v3.7 022800

80gig hd is not recognized. I've looked everywhere for a bios upgrade but the computer is so obscure!! :(
Help would be very much appreciated, thanks.

..update..

I found a newer version, 3.8, and it made it past the first POST screen unlike before, but now it hangs up when it tries to list the hd's size.
This makes me think that the newer bios fixed the 32gig problem but not the 64g barrier? i'm not sure however..

File Name: PM5250 - BIOS 3.8.exe -- Disk: 1 of 1
Category: BIOS -- Size: 431647
Description: Corrects system hang up during the POST using Maxtor hard drive with model 96147U8 Diamond Max VL60 (61GB). Adds software switches in BIOS flash POST screen enable or disable. For board revisions 3.0C or higher.
OS: Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4, Windows 2000
Version Number: 3.8 -- Post Date: 7/21/2000 1:02:36 PM

True. Just checked. Doesn't support HDDs over 64GB.

I've sent you the patched version (email) for support upto 128GB.

Create the bootdiskette as usual as you would have done with the NEC download. Once created, simply replace the w6131ip2.380 file with the one I sent you. Then flash. It should solve your problem.

Please post results, but remember that you flash at your own risk.

Dear Chemical,

Which flash utility program did you use?
Uniflash (version?) or an Award type (version?)?

Thanks

Yep Chemical

If you still look at this thread, it would be interesting to know which flash utility you used. In fact, that would be some interesting and perhaps useful feedback on any BIOS upgrade, to get a feel what people find easier to work with and which people have better results with.

I used awdflash, but an older version, 6.xx? I can check if its necessary.
On this computer(NEC) it is included, and asks me on boot if i'd like to enter awdflash.

What version of Award Flash doesn't bother me in particular.

They seem to have done some weird things with Award Flash in different versions. Trying to accomplish different tasks required trialing different versions of Award Flash until I found one that worked, and now I have discovered UniFlash does the job without the fuss.

I pretty much use the utility that the manufacturer tells me to, and if I have too many problems I use UniFlash.
