I am trying to install a 80G WD hard drive, and i have it patched up to the 2.a version that supports drives over 64G and has a date of 08-21-2000 on it. The problems is that once i connect this drive as primary or slave the system boots , sees the drive and then locks up after it goes thru the disk search.
I have no idea of what to do next and could use any help or ideas.

Do you have drive jumpers set properly? If the drive is the only device on the cable, it must be configured as single, not master.

Try to set it up manually in BIOS, rather than having it autodetected.

Well i was able to get the bios tricked into seeing the HD, and once it saw it I was able to load the software that came with it and XP saw it then.
Thanks to everyone for all the help i was so lost.
