Can this (old-ish) system boot from a USB flash drive ?

BIOS update, EIDE card, or overlay software? (FAQ Hard disk recognition)

Can this (old-ish) system boot from a USB flash drive ? It doesn't seem to recognise it right now.

Should be a Gigabyte GA-6BXE, please verify this with model number printed between the PCI slots.
You may need to test the latest Bios to check USB booting

That is indeed what it is :)
