My external WD 160gb hard drive was not recognized

I have Asus P3V4X motherboard with Windows XP, as I connect my WD 160gb hard drive first he can detect it and you can access it, but after several minutes it will hangup and try to install the driver but the computer responds that it will not recognized. Anybody can help?

any service packs installed? any version of the VIA 4-in-1 chipset drivers installed?

Try to put the drive in another PC and see if the same problem arises. If it does, then the drive definitely has a problem.
