Hi, I found this message board through Google where I am searching some info and instructions on how to update BIOS on my friend's computer. I'm novice computer user when it comes to this, fixing the computer.

I would like to find out how to update there BIOS that will read the 80 GB HDD which has been installed already. The computer is currently showing 32 GB hard drive. I had to use CJL to be able to boot the drive. The software for BIOS is Award Software.

I learned that there are two files I need to get which is 1) a flash utility and 2) .bin file unfortunately I wasn't sure what kind of motherboard is it? I have uploaded the .html file where you can help me find the answers on what kind of motherboard is it and what kind of .bin file to look for as well as an utitlity file so I can update the BIOS information.

The current BIOS information I used Belarc Advisor: (edit- removed link)

Now, what kind of .bin file do I need to find to update the BIOS? What is the best flash utility?

Is there a website, similarity to this: http://www.ecsusa.com/downloads/flashAward.html, that will help me follow the instructions? Or is this pretty good instructions? I'm not very good with reading instructions so having a picture shown with step to step instructions will help me understand it.

Thanks!

Thanks.

The question is which one should I use to update the .bin file?

1. WinFlash Utility

or

2. Award Flash Utility

After downloading two files (one flash utitlity and a .bin file) and placed 'em on floppy disk to boot the system. And, I went to BIOS to change the boot sequence to A first then restart the computer.

It says "Remove disks or other media. Press any key to restart".

I'm stuck... help?!

EDIT: Wait a minute, in flashAward instructions, under step one, #1. If your mainboard has a BIOS protection jumper, please change the setting to allow BIOS flashing.

Was I supposed to remove the jumper off from 80 GB HDD???? Will this work to boot to update BIOS, right?

Under step 2 it says:
Make a DOS boot disk. (See example: Windows 98 O.S.)

The current os is Window XP Home Edition.

After formatting the floppy disk, am I supposed to put two files on floppy disk? or leave it blank?

EDIT: I finally got it and followed the instructions by How to use Award Flash utility.

I don't have "Load Optimized Defaults" and I changed the boot sequence back to normal. I re-checked to see if it's back to 80 GB HDD instead of capacity limitation of 32GB on "My Computer" which isn't happening. :(

In my CMOS, I have "Load BIOS Defaults" and "Load SETUP Defaults". Which one are similar/same as "Load Optimized Defaults"?

remove the 32GB capacity limiting jumper from the harddisk.check the label or the manual of your harddisk for the appropriate setting.

and by the way: windows xp (SP1 + regpatch or SP2 out of the box) would recognize the full size of the hdd no matter what the bios would say.
