Maxtor: problem solved

Hello all. What a beautiful day. Yesterday, I got fed up of all this restrictive nonsense (see discussion above), and I bought a Promise IDE controller model Ultra133-TX2. I was a bit relunctant because today's BIOS' are able to address large HDs... Also, because my current PCI bus speed is only 33M...

Award 4.51PG vs 6.x ?

Hi Jan. Thanks for the info. Now another question: What is (are) the difference(s) between Award 4.51PG and the 6.x BIOS? If I had an Award 6.x BIOS, then you're saying I could get extra updates? Well, I've been to the ASUS website again, and the latest file they have is v.0112 (beta!), and their As...

Custom-designed OEM BIOS?

Me again... I haven't given up hope that the stupid 137GB barrier can be overcome with a few bytes' worth of patching in a bios file. About 1½ month ago, I was contacted by what seemed to be an independent "bios-broker" (if there is such a thing). Since I had contacted a few companies about my probl...

DRAM fine-tuning

Well, I've done it :!: I'm not the proud owner of 256M SDRAM, as per: 2x 128M SDRAM, 66MHz, CL=2, Unbuffered, Non-parity, 10ns, 3.3V (16M x 64) [p/n CT16M64S4D10] However, my W2K has crashed a few times, with KMODE exception errors. I've also seen disk paging errors on one of my disks. I did increas...

Faster SDRAM?

Thanks guys. Another thing. Assuming I choose the right type of DIMM, what about speed? I mean, the mobo doc says 60ns or 70ns is supported, but by manually tweaking the settings in the BIOS, is it possible to make fater chips work? 50ns? 40ns? etc. ... or will I hit a failure threshold ? Or will th...

Self-solved

Hi guys. Thanks for the help. I've been doing some independent research, and found this nifty site listing all possible jumper permutations for CPU frequency, Bus frequency and core voltage: http://www.lairdslair.com/TX97E.shtml What I have to do is change the bus jumper to 75 MHz and see if my CPU ...

Confused about terminology

(First of all, I am Canadian too, :P) Rookie and Soupy, thank you very much for the info, but now I'm a little confused... My manual says RAM modules can have a maximum of 24 chips. I assume that's on both sides... So how does that translate into the "X by Y" I see in the chip specs? The lowest I fo...

Upgrade AMD-K6 233MHz to AMD K6-3 400+MHz ? - Advice req.

Hello (again) friends. :) I want to upgrade my CPU without changing mobo. I want to replace my AMD K6 233MHz to a faster AMD K6-3 450MHz. I don't know what's the maximum CPU speed I could get away with, considering my mobo is a few years behind, but I read that 400 or 450MHz is not impossible. I jus...

Upgrading RAM from SIMMs to DIMMs - Advice req.

Hello friends. :) I want to upgrade my RAM without changing mobo. I want to replace my 2 x 32M EDO SIMMs (60ns) with 1 x 256M or 2 x 128M DIMMs. Chips must comply with the specs below. I may want to put them in a new PC in the future, so I'd like the new RAM to be the most performant, while not cras...
