Well it turns out its not the ram after all, I managed to get into linux fdisk which has a lot more features interms of setting cylinders sectors etc. And while playing with that I must of got it pretty close and it alowed me to install. However it still crashes after a reboot with segmentation erro...

Well dont I feel like a idiot, Nick first patch seems to work ok! well that is when you remove the dicky ram that is........ My mb & bios do not do a ram check and as long as the faulty ram was in second bank no indication on powerup. If it went faulty while i was doing the upgrade I do not know but...

Hi NickS Can you do a patch that disables udma in the bios, I ask because of what maxtor say about ata133 drives and award bios that the hd may be forced to run in MS-DOS compatibility mode. Hi NickS Thanks but...no good same thing. formats ok full size, creat one primary dos partition, attempt to install win98, enters setup runs check on file systems etc and says copying files needed then asks you to remove all disks and reboots and just repeats the same process, same problem as before...

Yes I did try multiple smaller partitions however using maxtor's maxblast 3 software. It appears that the os do not appear to like the way is is been formatted. Not knowing enough about the subject I just know that ther is a lot more to formatting a large drive and partitions on hd over 32gb than me...

Nick Thanks the patch appears to work, the bios does not hang at hd detection and sees the 40gb maxtor drive now without the caplimit jp I am however installing linux and the setup hangs with a kernel panic because it does not like the hd. i have had this before when the partitions and formating is ...
