Dell recommended updating the BIOS on this notebook in order to run Windows 2000. I downloaded the bios upgrade per their instructions, and proceded to flash the BIOS. The Dell utility checked the compatibility, erased the existing BIOS, and proceded to reprogram. However, the system hung at 0%, and after powering off, the notebook would not even power up. Dell told me the BIOS was not replaceable, and that I needed a new motherboard. This, however, is not true - the BIOS chip is removable.

Anyone know where I can get a new BIOS chip flashed with the latest BIOS, or where I can get this chip reprogrammed?

Is the chip standard DIP or PLCC? What's printed on it?

By the way, there was a typo in the subject of my original message. The Dell model is a Latitude CPi D266XT

So it's standard PLCC chip. You can have it programmed somewhere (maybe in some electronics shop) or program it yourself in PC motherboard (with PLCC-to-DIP adapter).

How does the BIOS update come? Is it an .exe file or a BIOS image? If it's an image, we'll flash it for you for the price of postage. We're in NY.

Unfortunately, it's an EXE file. I don't believe that there's an image file available. Perhaps there is a utility out there than can create an image file somehow from a good machine. Another idea is to get the chip out of a good machine, and have someone duplicate it. I'm open to suggestions.

What's the size of the EXE file? If not too large, send it to my e-mail (can't download it without registration at stupid Dell support).

You can download things from dell by going to http://support.ap.dell.com, it doesn't require you to register there, or just go to http://ftp.us.dell.com
