Replace The Chip

Hello,

I have a Motherboard with a faulty chip PN: MX28F1000: MXIC 12 volt flash ROM (it failed many times b4 and never saves the settings or the clock, i replaced the battery but to no avail)

and I have another dead board with a working chip PN: 29EE010: SST 5 volt flash ROM.

my question is:

Can I reprogram the chip of the dead board with the BIOS on the faulty one (from the net) and then exchange the Chips

What's the make and model of the board (i.e. does it have a jumper for selecting 5V/12V programming voltage)?

As much as I have seen these MX28F1000 flash chips they are almost all faulty (or cycle limit exceeded).

The board is Soyo 5ED

and it doesnt have a programming voltage jumper

Although pin 1 (which is VPP (+12V) for MX28F1000) is marked as NC in the 29EE010 datasheet I guess it would be wise to bend it so that it won't touch the socket (this also applies to pin 30).
Another issue is whether there are flash routines for 29EE010 in the SY-5ED BIOS. If there aren't, you will get an "Unknown flash type" or similar error instead of "Updating ESCD...Success" (or whatever the exact message was).

The clock has nothing to do with the BIOS chip...

Oops... Somehow missed the reason why peachy wanted to replace the BIOS chip.

I want to replace the chip coz whenever I boot the PC (warm or Cold Boot) it gives me a Checksum Error message and resets the BIOS.

According to Soyo's Technical Support, This maybe a battery problem or a Faulty Chip.

And I replaced the battery and flashed a new BIOS sucssesfully but the problem still presistes.

So the only thing left for me to try is to replace the chip.

yes the clear CMOS Jumper is set to normal

I assume the message is "CMOS checksum error" NOT "BIOS checksum error". Do not confuse the CMOS/clock functions with the BIOS functions. Replacing the BIOS chip is not going to solve your clock/configuration problem.

the problem was an instable RAM, and now everything works well, I have to test the other PCs as well
