Hi there,
I have just bought a Hitachi Travelstar 7K200 with Bulk data encryption. You have some details here: http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/bulk_faqs.htm#a2
My Sony Vaio VGN SZ5MN/B doesn't have the HDD password in bios. It has only the BIOS password.
I've tried to update my laptop bios unsuccessfully, and right now the only solution to use this hdd feature is adding ATA Security eXtension to my BIOS.
http://www.fitzenreiter.de/ata/ata_eng.htm
Please help me to add this feature, I've read several time the introductions on his website but it's to hard for me.
Those are my laptop spec:
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T5600 @ 1.83GHz
System Manufacturer Sony Corporation
System Name VGN-SZ5MN_B
Mainboard Vendor Sony Corporation
Mainboard Model VAIO
BIOS Vendor Phoenix Technologies LTD
BIOS Version R0112N0
BIOS Date 04/12/2007
Many thanks.

In short, your laptop is incompatible with the Bulk Data Encryption feature of the harddisk.
Technical answer:
The Phoenix bios in this laptop is a pure Phoenix (not Award/Phoenix) bios which is not compatible with the "ATA Security eXtension BIOS" module. The other option would be to use a network bootrom but since this is a laptop you cannot use that method either, I do not know of any laptop network cards with a bootrom.
