Hy,

i have a Gericom Blockbuster 251S5 and i downloaded new bios for gericom update site. I flashed it and evrything has gone fine. But it is not  .

Bios makes problems. My computer wont boot, it wont start windows setup or anything. When i got to bios and reset to deafult it boots and works for a hour or two or sometimes a minute or two. Then it freezes and i have to restart and reset bios to default settings for it to work.

I want to flash back older version of bios but cannot find it
( i didnot do backup  )

Does anyone have older versions of bios for this motherboard?

Here are some data i got with a software analysis:

Bios type: American Megatrends
Bios date: 11.12.2003 ( odd on gericom site it is dated 03.05.2005)
Bios id: 63-0620-009999-00101111-040201-SiS650-N251SX
Chipset: SiS 646 rev 1

I tired American megatrends analyzing osftware but it says motherboard is Toshiba. Toshiba only offers support for their laptops.

Thank you in advance, you will save my life :D .

Did you already try sending email to manufacturer support and ask for the original bios using the serial number of the laptop?

I guess the only hope is to find someone with a similar laptop and have a backup of the bios file.

ftp://download.gericom.com/NOTEBOOK/Blo ... S251S5.zip
It's password protected...
Are you tried to phone them?

I have this BIOS/Motherboard combo which is a rebranded Gericom Laptop (Advent from PC World). I have never been able to upgrade to XP SP2 and was told a BIOS upgrade could solve this problem. So, I flashed the BIOS with the one above and now my Laptop is screwed. It won't boot anymore. How can I recover it? Thanks!

Is there any life left? Does it read floppy?

If not, propably it is good idea to start looking for a fresh laptop

The screen just comes up with garbage and that's that. I was using a Boot CD as it doesn't have a floppy. BIOS chip isn't detachable so I reckon it's screwed :( Is there any way to fix this type of problem?

If it reads floppy, then there is slight chance for bios update to succeed.
Otherwise you need a fresh motherboard.

If the laptop is old, it is propbly wisest to sell it for parts and buy fresh laptop via eBay or similar.

Don't give up quite yet, i've had some sucess in re flashing a similar laptop. the only problem being remembering the key sequences that are required to get the bios flashing software to work. you can find a working Bios at the uniwill site (although not one that will solve the rather anoying SP2 problem which i'm currently trawling sites to try and resolve myself).

I Found the easiest method was to run the flash tool from a usb drive, which i think is possible on the N251S6.(although you can use a cdrom, but it can be a little tricky setting it up as a dos boot disk, see bootdisk.com for info) HP have a utility on their web site that will put a boot floppy image onto a pen drive then all you have to do is add the flash util (also avaliable from the UNIWILL site) and the bios file, modify the autoexec.bat and your away..... Well nearly... its a matter of guessing the key sequence to confirm the flash operation all whilst you can't see.

The Bios if i remember correctly also has a recover mode which should pick up the bios file from a disk and flash it automatically when it is named correctly (ami.rom i think?)..

with a bit of searching you might sort out the problem. if i can find the info from when i last tried it i'll post it some time next week!

Ps if you get the machine working again, and find a solution to the SP2 / Apci issue let me know ..

Cheers

Hy, I also have a Gericom Blockbuster 251S5 and I can send you a back up of my BIOS wich is:

Bios type: American Megatrends
BIOS (NB) Version: 1.90G
AMI EC591 Version: 1.14
Bios id: 63-0620-009999-00101111-040201-SiS650-N251SX
wich seams to be compatible with yours...

I hope I can help you, what is the best way to backup my BIOS?

My notebook also have a problem, it's DVD player doesn't work at all.
The BIOS find it but the windows XP doesn't show it's drive...
I already tryed to install other DVD, but a BIOS message appeared (something like this: "Device not compatibble")

Since I didn't have any idea what to do, I was decided to flush the BIOS, but fortunatly I read your message first...

I hope we can help each other...

It's easy. Unzip and copy the files to a blank diskette.
Restart your system with it. At the A: prompt type:
amiflash /s
The software is interactive, use the menu to backup your Ami BIOS to a file (could be oldbios.rom).
