This 'ComputerTrace status' is listed on the Security tab under User Password in PhoenixBIOS 2.6.1 on a Dell Inspiron 1501 notebook, and the options are Activate/Deactivate.

The problem is this - I just bought this laptop and the "ComputerTrace status" had a selectable "Deactivate" option and some other information underneath that I didnt get to read before i selected "Deactivate" by accident.

Now the option is changed to "Activate" but it cannot be changed back! And the other info is gone and I cant find out anything about what the heck ComputerTrace does and whether it is active or inactive on my laptop.

I googled it but there is very little, if any, information about this that I can find.

I got no replies at all on my question and this is one of the most popular sites for discussing BIOS.

So really - nobody ever heard of ComputerTrace!?

Has my laptop been singled out for a secret government project or something??

they embed some useless routines into the bios to sell a service that promises to recover or rather delete the data on your laptop in case of lost/theft. leave it disabled..there's nothing you should worry about.
