Hey guys. First off I want to say I'm really glad I'm not the only one with this problem...

I'm using a pavilion dv2415nr.

So, I went to replace my Broadcom card with a shiny new
Atheros...PCI\VEN_168C &DEV_001C &SUBSYS_3063168C

only, i of course get the "104..." error, please don't do anything with your $700 laptop that we can't make money off of. (I will never buy hp again)

anyway, I see this thread and think awesome. Awesome to the max! (80's to the max) and proceed with the bios mod. long story short, I find the hex code in MOD_5100.ROM and replace some other broadcom card's values with my precious atheros card numbers. (8c16 6330 8c16 1c00) flashed using winflash and reboot.

Trouble is I still get that pesky 104 error on boot! Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

Hello people!
I register here cause i found lots of good info in this thread about the problem i was experiencing with my Presario v6000 when i tried to install a new wireless atheros card.I got greeted with 104 error urecognized device message.So by reading here everything i cold lay my eyes on i have successfully edited my bios to accept my new wireless atheros card...YAY!
I would like to thank everyone here that provided great info on how to do this cause without the guides here i would have not been able to do what i did.

And also if anyone has the same laptop setup like mine (Presario v6000,Amd Turion 64) and you need the bios file i have managed to edit than im more than willing to share it with you.

Hi all,

i've got an HP NC6400 notebook, with 3945gb intel wifi mini pci card

I want to install a broadcom card (dell 1390)

but i've got an 104 error cause of the whitelist.

I downloaded the last bios pack from hp, and i can flash a modified bios to my notebook.

But.... i can't really find the whitelist

The Bios image is 68YCU.BIN, size 1Mo.

My actual pci card 3945gb is : PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_4222 &SUBSYS_135C103C &REV_02\4&4878531&0&00E1

So i look for 86802242 string

3 occurences :
868022428680234000FF274208F004803100FF02CC02C05C00020C7702CC00C0005EEE022001BAA000CEA000E0@ 22963
868022427410810027F7427408010128427512C8B60F7012B30F59A1EF9F942C01DF90015802F462D02003DEF4@ 6c504
868022427410DE81002742740801012842237512B60F7012B30F59A1EF9F947F2C0190015802F462D07B2003F4@ 7c450

But for those occurences, no subsys !!!!

i guess the bios is compressed, here's an ascii DUMP of some parts of the bios image :602-˝D ette Bˇoot Reco#rd£0`5eÂΩ

Somethiing interesting

there is a 8-bytes CRC inside the bios image; every 8 bytes, there is one byte of CRC or parity

that's why i could not find the 3945gb wifi card, here it is :

@10BE2

86(7F)8022423C105B13
-> 8086:4222 Intel 3945gb
-> 10C3 : HP subsytem
-> 135B : high subsystem ID

7F between 86 and 80 is CRC check.

several bytes later i found this :
E414(5F)12433C106084 -> 14E4:4312 Broadcom Wifi 4312
-> 10C3 : HP subsystem
-> 8460 : high subsytem UD

Well, i found it !

But because of the CRC, i dont want to try to patch and break my laptop.

Any idea please ?

Hi @ all,

nice to see, that other people do have the same problem like me.

I got a HP NX5000 from my work. It came with a tft problem which I fixed. Now I can use it for my own.

In it there is a Intel 2100 mini pci WLAN card which can only handle wireless b but everywhere I am there is only wireless g.

Now I bought a new mini pci card from TP-Link. The exact product ID is TL-WN660G Ver:2.0.

After I put it in the notebook the shit message came, that there is a problem with wlan card and so on.

Than I searched the net and found this thread.

Is it possible to fix my bios like in the faq on the first site?

I got the Phoenix Biosedit tool, but I can`t open the bios file.

It is called Rom.bin. And there is a Rom.sig in the folder too. These two files were in a Rom.cab which I extractet.

Did anybody patch his bios for a HP NX5000 and can give me a clue?

And how do I find out the vendor and so on from my new mini pci wlan card?

Hope you can help me here a bit!

Thanx a lot!

I've read enough now that I feel halfway comfortable modding the bios whitelist for new wifi card.

Computer: Compaq v3015nr w/ AMD64x2, winXP home, bios F.39 (flashed sucessfully from HP site last week).
current card: 802.11b/g broadcom 14E4 4311 1363103C
new card: 802.11b/g/n Gigabyte 1814 0681 E9391458

I have bios editor, hex editor 2.1.0.0, and have experimented doing all the changes. Right up to the burn. I'm ready but have cpl questions first.

1. In case I fail I need to be ready with recovery plan. I have usb floopy and recovery files. Does the bootable floppy have to be made from dos? If so can it be done from dos window? If not how do I boot to dos?

2. Somewhere I read that some laptops have bios "boot fail recovery" disabled. From my bios open in multiboot III view, this feature has no symbol in the "value" field. The others with no symbol are "floppy check" and "boot from floppy". All others have an asterik or some value. I assume this means "boot fail recvery" and "boot from floppy" are enabled, and that I do not need to change. Am I correct?

3. Whitelist is in mod_5100.rom. Do I need to verify size is same after mod? If its not what should I do.

4. Some have said whitelist bios mods don't work on AMD based systems. Any truth?

5. Since Im using winxp home, I assume I use winplash, not winplash64 (confusing since I have AMD 64x2 processor). Is this correct?

If anyone knows of a 802.11N pcie card that will work on my system, I'll buy it, so I don't risk the brick.

any other suggestions are appreciated.

Many thanks.
