Hey guys. I hope you guys are doing much better than I.
I have an old IBM Thinkpad 600(no E, nor X).
I've stored it for a while and it drained the CMOS battery. Therefore, I've replaced with brand new battery. but this error 173 and 163 will not go away.
Another intersting thing is, when I tried to access easy setup by powering on the laptop with F1 key held, it first comes up with Error 00173 00163 and goes to date setup. After that a white progress bar runs about 90% and the laptop is stuck!
Is this mean I have a bad MoBo?
I've tried most of suggestions on this forum and it doesn't work.... :(

Do anyone knows where I can buy the MoBo for cheap and secure?( I mean besides eBay)
Any help will be greatly appreciated. TY

Some more thoughts: if TP600 stucks after setting the time correctly but before entering Easy Setup menu, it may indicate that CMOS is not holding the value Bios tries to write there.

One possible reason could be that the new bios battery is of wrong type or it is empty.

What is the resolution of the display? To be honest, I think that If it is 1024*768 than your TP600 is worth saving. If it is less I would sell it for parts and go for 600E or 600X.

The old ThinkPad 600 could be one stubborn donkey.

Take out the main battery.
Be sure, that the new CMOS battery is a CR2025 cell.

Now try and fire it up again, without the main battery.

This *should* cure any boot problems with the old ThinkPad 600.

Kindest regards

I am having the same problem with a Thinkpad 600. But I get to a screen with ON |OFF on it and the machine freezes completely. Must remove battery and unplug to restart. CMOS battery is full and correct type.
