I would like to switch to win XP from win 2000 on my NEC Versa LXi notebook but I am afraid that the present latest release of the NEC BIOS (dated 4/30/2001) which bears the number 123A3600 v36 will not be able to support XP adequately. For example, maximum disk drive is 20 gig.

Does anyone know a solution to this problem?

If that is the latest version of the bios and it's not compatible with XP or larger harddrives the only solution is a new notebook.

Laptop manufacturers "usually" mention inadequate XP support when they believe the ACPI implementation in BIOS isn't 100% compatible. You can always use APM... it has worked for me always.
