NIC is short for Network Interface Card, so NIC is basically another name for what is also commonly referred to as Network Card.

Entry level modems seem to be USB only. If you pay a bit more you can get a modem to install as a network device. You should check the ports on your modem - the modem may have both a USB and a RJ45 port (RJ45 is the connectors used on network cables and ports, and looks similar to but a bit larger (wider) than a phone line socket. The RJ45 port has more pins and the phone cables and network cables are NOT to be interchanged between the two ports).

A modem that can be configured as a network device (referred to as an Ethernet modem) can either be attached directly to an ethernet port (RJ45) on your PC. Better still, you can attach it to a network hub, and then use any computer attached to the network hub to access the Internet through the computer - network hub - ethernet modem connection.
