If any one can help me please.
In order to have my computer working, I have to turn it ON several times: some times I ha to press the switch botton 1,3, 4, or 7 times,

!The problem!
After turning ON my PC it goes to the post screen, then a messages appears
"C:\windows\system\vmm32.vxd
missing\unable to load
Press any key to shut down. "

Then I try again and again until is ON. When PC is on I check for this file and the file is there.

! What Happened in the past !
When I run Norton last mounth, it detected 3 viruses (W32.kitro,JSexception)Soo Norton fixed the files infected. So maybe this could be the cause of the problem, but I'm not sure.

I will really appreciate the effort if any one can help me with this.
Thank you soo much.

! just in case !

Try reinstalling Windows. It'll replace missing/broken files.

I didn't say erase your HDD and then reinstall Windows.
I meant reinstall Windows over your existing Windows installation. It'll just replace the OS, and will respect your already-installed stuff. it won't erase anything.

It sometimes work, sometimes not - may be also hardware problem. Check the RAM using Gold Memory http://www.goldmemory.cz. What board do you have?

Also, your hard drive may have developed bad clusters, run scan disk or any other Hard drive utility on the drive.

Try running scandisk in DOS or Safemode.

JOE
I did scandisk and defrag in safe mode. It worked good and the disk was Ok
Why it didn't run in Normal?

Stranger
I did what you told me but it couldn't find the file. But it found another corrupt file and it fixed it.
About the Vm32.vxd, I found the problem and I want to explain it because this can help other person.
I was trying to Install Vmax Scanner Unsucesfully. The device driver for the card is too slow for new processor and corrupts window's virtual memory manager (vmm32). Soo to fix it.
Run "sysedit"
choose windows system.Ini
scroll to " [386enh] "
Disable the line "device=c\windows\vmaxis11.386"
Thank you soo much for you help
I learned a lot.

Scandisk or defrag cannot complete if anything writes to the disk when they are trying to run. It sounds like something is running in the background on your system, unless you are in safe mode.

As far as the missing files problem, I would strongly suggest that you first go with ajzchips advice, and reinstall windows, after booting from a floppy or the windows CD, if possible. If you do run setup after booting from CD or floppy, windows may try to install into a new directory ("WINDOWS.0000" for win 98, I believe). Make sure you install it to the same folder it was in originally (check before you do it). If you are worried about loosing you data, back it up first. If you have no way to do that, I would strongly suggest that you get some way of doing so in place ASAP.
