I have a Gigabyte GA-586S2 REV 1.2 motherboard with Award Modular Bios V4.51PG, Award PNP Bios Extensions v1.01A, Bios code 11/10/97-SIS-5582-W877-2A5IIG0BC-00. I obtained the flash utility FLASH864.EXE, latest bios update 5S2_22.BIN, and upgrade instructions from http://tw.giga-byte.com/support/bios.htm. Unfortunately, the flash utility does not recognize the system/part and asks me to check the write protection setting. I did and its set to permit writes to flash. Now what? Is this a bug in the utility, a problem with my system, or operator error?

Reason for upgrade: To hopefully solve a problem with installing a BFG Geforce2 MX200 grahics card. The system hangs with no beeps or display on monitor even when its the only card in the system.

Check for write protection jumper/option in BIOS setup. Try using older Awdflash or use UniFlash.

I downloaded and used the AWD789.EXE utility from your site and the upgrade appears to have worked. The Unicore Chip Detect program now reports the configuration as:

Program: Unicore Chip Detect v0.72 2000.03.10
BIOS Date: 07/30/98
BIOS Type: Award Modular BIOS v4.51PG
BIOS ID: 07/30/98-SiS-5582-W877-2A5IIG0BC-00
BIOS Eval: AUTO DETECT INTEL(R) SERIES CPU START Ver.2.2
Chipset: SiS 5597 rev 2
Superio: Winbond 877TF (use 87h) rev 0 found at port 3F0h

The date in the BIOS ID has changed and I do notice some additional menu items in the CMOS setup. Unfortunately it did not fix my graphics card problem. Any ideas?

Thanks for your help with the BIOS upgrade.

Replace the card. Try ATI Radeon instead.
