Hi there!

I have bought an IBM Deskstar (or deathstar) 60GXP 40gb about a year ago (and already returned it 3 times) and my board only sees 33gb.

I have read that it is caused by divide overflow if the disk size exceedes 65535 * 16 * 63 * 512 = 33822351360 bytes = 34 GB, but the drive is CHS 16383/16/63.

I tried to find it on http://wims.rainbow-software.org, but my board isn't there.

Is there another numbers to insert in the bios so that it sees the entire disk, or do i need my bios patched?

BIOS: 12-28-00, http://206.135.80.155/bios/71571228.exe

thanks for helping us with these difficult tasks!

Please make sure the 32GB Limitation clip on your HDD is not set !
>> Looks very much your jumper is set to limit the HDD to show only 32GB otherwise the Bios would detect the full 40GB or just hang detecting it (if the Bios still has the 32GB BUG)

Are you using LBA or CHS to configure the drive? :?
Flash your BIOS at your own risk.

I am using autodetect on boot, so i really don't know. And no, i'm not using the 32gb clip, it's set with factory default jumpers: 16 heads / device 0 (master).

My bios either hangs on detection or reports 33gb, i have the hard drive right here but i can't confirm it right now, i'm running a server program for other users.

To bypass the 33gb limit, i was using IBM's DDO (dynamic drive overlay), but i would prefer a patched bios (if possible also the 64gb limit), so that i don't get this problem with other possible hard drives.

I believe DDO's software bridge between the motherboard and the hard drive results in a decrease in the hard drive's performance.

By the way, i am using a maxtor 4.3gb as master and a seagate barracuda IV 80gb as slave with full access to the entire drive, but i think this is only possible because of windows xp, because with windows 98se i can see the files on the seagate, but i can't copy them, and weird chars appear on some files/folders.

That BIOS should already support HDDs over 32GB. If not, this one certainly does: http://206.135.80.155/bios/71571228.exe:
