I have a Dell Dimension 8250, P4 3.06GHz, with a Phoenix BIOS, version A04. I replaced the stock CPU fan with a Zalman fan to get rid of the terrible noise. It worked, but the computer boots with a "Previous CPU fan failure" error message about every third time I start it up. I have to keep clearing the event log. Zalman recommends either disabling the CPU fan detection or reducing it to below 1300 RPMs. Unfortunately, my Startup BIOS menu does not include any CPU fan setting options. Is there anything I can do about this problem?

If you have another intake/exhaust fan in the case, you might try plugging it into the CPU fan header.
Flash your BIOS at your own risk.

Thanks Soupy, I tried your suggestion but I still have the same problem. Actually, I've discovered that clearing the event log has no effect on the problem. Even without clearing the event log I still boot up OK about 2/3rds of the time. Now I'm interested in trying to tweak the BIOS to disable CPU fan detection. Unfortunately this Dell 8250 doesn't tell me much. I think it's a Phoenix BIOS, but I'm not positive. How can I ID the Motherboard, chipset, and BIOS so that I can start looking around for tweaks?

Thanks,

Vegas
