Have a sony laptop PCG-F580. The laptop can read, show directory contents, open .txt files in the CD-ROM drive but cannot execute anything.

Tried lots of things...finally reformatted the hard disk. Now have a laptop running on DOS...but the problem continues...still cannot run executable files from the CD-ROM drive like setup.exe

Could this be a BIOS problem? ...since i have tried booting the computer from a bootable CD.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Does this happen with *ALL* CDs, or just your OS CD?

Seems to happen with the OS CD's and other CD's containing software installations. Haven't really tried with any other CD's since i don;t have too many CD's which have executables running on the DOS platform.

I'm assuming you want to run either 2K or XP, so use the OS Installation floppies to boot up (make them on another PC if you don't already have them) and see if the 2K/XP installation routine will read the CD.
Flash your BIOS at your own risk.
